When a child reaches 18, they Age Out of the foster care system, they hand them a
small amount of money and send them on their way to start a life. Watch the clip of the
documentary Place to Place. What did you find surprising, or not? How can we better
help those that find themselves aging out of the Foster Care system?
In terms of the foster care system, I didn't know much about it other than that
children might be adopted to households, and that if the foster parents were
happy and caring, they would officially adopt the child or children they would
love to add to their own or establish a family with. It's a system that, of course,
has flaws if the children aren't cared for, and if the family isn't raising the children
as well, but once the children reach the age of 18, I was entirely ignorant of how
they are being introduced to just go out into the world instead of accepting or
seeking guidance from programs or counselors into becoming functioning adults
who can make and maintain a lifestyle.
