GEO 345 Discussion 4
Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs) are legal contracts that many governments at
the national level have accepted in order to obligate one another to pursue agreed-upon
sustainability requirements. Trade conventions are a strategy for resolving large-scale global
pollution since they frequently transcend national borders, such as fossil fuel emissions, drought,
and loss of biological and ecological variety.
There are hundreds of MEAs, but there is no centralized organization to manage them. MEAs
have multiple corporate setups and levels of redundancy. The inability of MEAs to reduce
inequality and prosperity in connection to the environment and new energy technology has
drawn criticism from many quarters. Nonetheless, MEAs might be viewed as a positive step in
resolving the climate catastrophe and other environmental problems. By offering precise and
verifiable sanctions in the event that a community will not really uphold its pledges, they may be
fairly successful.
"A notion that advocates the wise use of resources and promotes ways to fulfill human needs
without causing environmental devastation," was how I defined sustainability. Two new notions
are added to the fundamental description I presented in the discussion on page 44. They include
providing for the basic necessities of the world's underprivileged and protecting the future of the
planet. The UNCLOS agreement outlines each nation's rights with regard to using the oceans. It
describes how to determine the size of the ocean inside a nation's exclusive economic zone
(EEZ) and how the presence of both natural and man-made structures affects ocean sovereignty.
It guarantees the free movement of innocent people in global waterways and maintains a nation's
authority to punish crossing via the EEZ by international boats. There are exceptions provided
for routes that are essential to a significant number of foreign boats. The agreement also outlines
procedures that should be followed for ocean conservation. It outlines steps to reduce coastal
contaminants and safeguard aquatic wildlife.
