1-1 Discussion: Save the Anthropologists
Hello all, my name is Brynne Nicholas. I am 33 years old and from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In
December of 2021, I graduated from Baton Rouge Community College with an associate degree in
Liberal Arts and now am looking to complete my bachelor's degree in General Studies with a
concentration in psychology here at SNHU. I am currently employed as a special education
paraprofessional and plan to complete an alternative special education teacher certification program
offered through my school district once I obtain my bachelor’s degree.
I have never studied anthropology, so I am excited to see what it entails! Anthropology is the
study of humanity or what makes us human, and its objectives include gaining an understanding of our
evolutionary history, our uniqueness as a species, and the wide variety of our social structures around
the globe and throughout time. "Anthropology, defined as "the study of humans," is unique in its
approach, its methods, and its objectives. Anthropology approaches the study of human culture
holistically. Anthropologists do not study aspects of culture such as the economy, family life, religion,
art, or communication in isolation. Rather, they explore how all of these spheres influence one another.
Anthropology focuses on understanding the nature of culture, and it focuses on understanding humans
as both biological and cultural beings. To understand humans, anthropologists believe that we must
seek to know all the social worlds in which people have lived and now live, thereby providing a well-
rounded view of the human experience. Anthropology seeks to understand the biological, technological,
and cultural development of humans over time. It explores ancestral, cultural, and language origins, and
how we live today and interact with each other and the environment. They do fieldwork, learn the
language, and live among the people in the community for long periods of time" (Mindedge, Inc., 2016).
There are four fields of anthropology which are archaeology, cultural anthropology, anthropological
linguistics, and biological or physical anthropology. However, each of these fields is broken down further
into sub-fields (Mindedge, Inc., 2016).
The sub-field that I was given for this assignment is cultural anthropology.
