Globalization and Social Change Final Exam

This exam is due Thursday December 8th on BlackBoard at 11:59 PM.  Answer only two of the three questions. (There’s no extra credit for answering all three).  Answers that are less than 3 average-size paragraphs are unlikely to reflect adequate understanding of the material.  No answer should have to be longer than 6 average-size paragraphs.  Each is worth 50% of the final exam grade.  Please refer to your textbook, lecture notes and the materials I have posted on BlackBoard in formulating your answers.  (As I formulated the questions I referred to the material in the PowerPoint slides coming from the textbook.)

Please note!  All answers must be in your own words.  Answers that are duplicated (including those that have been duplicated and then adjusted to make it appear as if they had not been duplicated) will receive no credit whatsoever, regardless of their source.  Any quotations must be properly credited and kept brief.  Answers that string together multiple quotations from several sources with insufficient writing of your own, also known as “patchworking,” will receive no credit.

1.) Explain, in your own words, why weak and/or failed states are viewed by the governments of most democracies as being a vital issue in matters of international security.

2.) How have the types of warfare around the world changed since the end of World War II?  Discuss in terms of the four types of armed conflict discussed in class (extrasystemic, interstate, internal, and internationalized internal) using historical or contemporary examples.

3.)  Select one invention of your choice from the middle 19th to middle 20th century (1850 – 1960) that helped shape contemporary globalization and explain what its impacts have been.  (The date restriction ensures that you select something other than “the internet” for your answer).
