In 2009 two computer programmers, Brian Acton and Jan Koum
wanted to create a company that would allow accessible messaging
across the world. This popular messaging app created value for itself
by outsourcing its app development to Russia. This was at the
beginning of the company’s timeline. The founders had a lack of
funds and people on their team, so they wanted to put more focus on
other aspects of their app development such as customer service.
Paying experienced app developers in Russia to work on the
technical side of the application saved the founders' high startup
costs and allowed them to utilize intellect that they did not have
themselves. This created value for WhatsApp and its customers
because the Russian app developers had more knowledge to create
an app that stood out against the competition and would make a
profit and Acton and Koum could focus on providing customer
service which would benefit the customer.
