5-2 Final Project One Submission: Application of the Fundamental Principles of Management for
a Successful Company
Zoom
Zoom Workplace is a proprietary videotelephony software program founded by Eric Yuan
in 2011. The program strategy involves a freemium model where the core feature is a free plan
that allows up to 100 concurrent participants with a 40-minute time restriction. Users can
upgrade their subscription from a free to a paid plan, with the highest supporting up to 1,000
concurrent participants for meetings lasting up to 30 hours. Zoom's mission is to make video
communications frictionless and secure while empowering people to connect and collaborate
seamlessly anywhere. Zoom's vision is to create a world where distance is no longer a barrier to
communication, where people can connect effortlessly and enlarge meaningful interactions
regardless of their physical location. Zoom communicates its mission and vision, which is "to
make video communications frictionless," by consistent internal messaging across various
channels, including company meetings, employee onboarding, and performance reviews, and by
prominently displaying it on its website and social media. They also emphasize the "care" value,
which focuses on customer satisfaction and employee well-being.
Zoom has several management practices, including testing, background, notifications,
waiting room, recording, etc. To manage people on Zoom, you, as the host, have the option to
use the "participants" panel to mute/unmute individuals; you can control screen sharing, monitor
who is attending, and assign breakrooms. Zoom has successfully executed its strategic
management plan by prioritizing a user-friendly interface, reliable technology, scalability, and a
freemium business model. Zoom is building a great product and listening to its customers every
step of the way, which has been a winning product strategy for them. Zoom's management has
helped positively influence the organizational culture by prioritizing open communication,
employee empowerment, employee happiness, work-life balance, continuous learning and
development opportunities, and actively fostering a sense of community and belonging. These
approaches have resulted in high employee satisfaction and a strong company reputation.
Zoom became successful because of its user-friendly interface, reliable performance, and
intense focus on simplicity. Zoom made widespread remote work during the pandemic
significantly more straightforward compared to its competitors like Skype and WebEx.
Employees who have worked for Zoom described the workplace as a positive experience with a
collaborative and supportive culture. They offer ample opportunities for employee growth and
focus on their employees' well-being. According to CEO Eric Yuan, Zoom's leadership style is
described as customer-focused, decisive, and employee-centric, with a strong emphasis on
communication, innovation, and a culture of trust. The founder and CEO of Zoom and other
senior executives use a combination of analytical and conceptual decision-making styles to
increase Zoom usage. Zoom is committed to ethical business practices and making its platform
seamless, safe, and secure for every user.
With Zoom's decision-making process, its management plays a crucial role. The process
consists of setting the strategic direction, making key business choices based on ethical
principles, and ensuring that decisions align with the company's overall vision. They also
prioritize customer needs and user experience while considering factors like security and privacy.
Zoom's management has adhered to ethical principles by prioritizing user security and privacy,
actively addressing concerns raised about data protection, and implementing features that allow
users to control their privacy settings within the platform. Zoom has strategically developed its
personnel by prioritizing employee engagement, flexible work arrangements, robust training and
development programs, by having open communication, and a strong focus on company culture.
