An organization would like to put metrics in place because of several
reasons. The organization can measure the internal communication
initiatives and their effectiveness through this. The organization can
start tracking company-wide communications effectively in a
quantifiable way by reviewing quarterly metrics and looking at
communication analytics. Here, the organization needs to consider
how to track employee engagement and improve performance on the
task. It is important to understand how you communicate and what
mode is used to communicate (Klipfolio, 2023). It is crucial to
consistently send out great content, whether a video from the
organizational CEO or policy updates; it does not matter if staff are
ignoring it or not reading it. Overall, key considerations like employee
engagement and satisfaction, alignment with organizational goals,
message effectiveness, communication channels and reach, change
management and employee adoption are essential for measuring
internal communication effectiveness (Men & Yue, 2019).
Internal communications concern the shared information with the
shareholders and the employees, including the board of directors. A
transformation to company policies is a part of internal
communication that is typically used for internal use as the message
is either supposed to be kept within the staff base or irrelevant to
outsiders. On the other hand, external communications pertain to
clients of an organization, prospective customers or clients, or any
other person outside the organization (The National Academies
Press). Such kinds of messages could include an organization's
initiatives or information concerning new products. It has been
identified that some of the key considerations for external
communications metrics often align with internal communications,
which creates a big difference in terms of reputation management
and audience perception and engagement (Men & Yue, 2019).
It is essential to consider the business environment where an
organization operates by implementing metrics for communication
effectiveness. Many important factors contribute to this, such as
organizational culture, regulatory and legal constraints, industry-
specific considerations, and stakeholder expectations (Cyphert,
2019).
