The perfect thing that comes to mind for me is the Twilight movies
that gained cult-like following back in 2008 upon its first movie
release. My boyfriend had only seen the first film and only bits and
pieces so he wasn't too familiar with the whole story as he had also
never read any of the books. When explaining the impact of the films
personally as well as globally, he found it hard to understand why so
many people had become obsessed with the series seemingly
overnight. I had to explain to him that many of the underlying themes
represented real-life human experiences for a very large
demographic. Curiosity in the unexplored and the supernatural, the
struggles of a teenager, the struggles of divorce, the need for family,
the dangers of love and depression, death and the yearning for
immortality, all prominent and semi-relatable underlying themes.
Most people think of Twilight as a teen love story and hot
werewolves and vampires but it takes some deeper thought to
uncover all of its true story. I found it easier to explain to him due to
having read the books a million times and knowing the story pretty
well. Due to him not being well versed on the series, I was able to go
in the greater detail that helped him to understand the significance of
the films for the masses and gain insight into why it became as
popular as it had.
