When one thinks of the term wellness, it is common to just think of just being
healthy and leading a happy and active lifestyle, but I deem it as a mix of many different
factors. Wellness is a blend of four different categories that when addressed and cared for
they enable the individual to lead the healthiest and happiest life they can. These four
categories are spiritual, emotional, physical, and social wellness. Many just think of
physical wellbeing in regards to leading healthy habits, but if one neglects their spiritual,
emotional, or social wellbeing it can lead to a lack of satisfaction in life. Building healthy
and support social connections within one’s community can not only help improve overall
wellness but can help the stabilize emotional wellbeing.
l In the field of healthcare, a patient’s wellness is a vital component in care plans and
treatments of said patient. Prevention and wellness are at the forefront of what public
health organizations work to implement and improve throughout the communities they
serve. This is done by promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors through healthcare education,
heath prevention and promotion programs, and health screenings/testing. By providing
these services to underprivileged populations, public health workers are able to help close
gaps in healthcare to improve the overall wellbeing of the individuals within these
communities.
