In Scenario # 1 , the thought of doing research interests me so I put
myself in this position to really think about how I would go about this.
Some of the challenges that I saw was working with a physician that I
was not too familiar with but if I knew the physician it would be more
rewarding in the end. I saw the Physician not truly interested or
knowing what the end goal was if he/she was removing patients from
the study. The Physician, which I would be depending on for
guidance, did not seem to know the true outcome of the grant and
with the inaccurate data the outcome would not be reasonable. Once
realizing that there were participants that were being removed from
the study, I would need to question why? When finding out the
reasoning was due to a diagnosis or poor prognosis - why were they
even considered in the first place. I do not think the goals of the study
were truly thought out to begin with. I would think the best way
would be to learn all about the study, goals and objectives, what
exactly the grant was for and what the money would be used for if
awarded and what the participants had to do, what qualifications
were needed to join. Having all of that information to begin with
would help distinguish if this was something I wanted to continue to
help gather data for.
Bowie defines Ethics as judgements of what is right and wrong(2019).
Something we all should learn from a young age. We all get that gut
feeling about certain situations and when reading this my gut is telling
me to learn more about this before you get yourself in trouble.
Policies are the rules and regulations employees must follow to keep
businesses running smoothly (Milano,2021) Policies cover many
different things including safety, use of company assets, and
guidelines for turning in paperwork. Would the Organizational
policies of this ABC organization have specific guidelines of such
research studies? If so, then there would be consequences if
participants were removed for insufficient reasoning and if I was
involved(getting paid for collecting data) then the consequences
would fall on me as well. The Department of Health and Human
Services has certain guidelines/policies for handling Human Subjects
within research (Protection of Human Subjects,2009)
If Ethics and Organizational policies do not align - then why are you
working for the organization in the first place. Everyone can have
their own opinions about certain things but if you are not taking the
policies, mission statements and core values to heart with the
organization that you are working for then that can only lead to
disaster in the long run. With the organization that I currently work
for the Core Values are something that I strive for each day with my
co-workers and patients. The Core Values help bring the policies to
light and make it easy to go to work each day. If the Physician in this
situation does not see the value from working with the patients, no
matter what the diagnosis/prognosis, he/she will not help the future
of this research even a possibility.
