Cultural Diversity:
The definition of cultural diversity is the existence of a variety of cultural or ethnic groups
within a society. Society is defined as an organization or club formed for a particular purpose
or activity. By this definition all healthcare organizations are type of society since it is an
organization formed for the purpose of providing high quality healthcare. In this “society”
there is the existence of a variety of cultural or ethnic groups.
Defining a topic of discussion is a type of awareness. Awareness is key to absorbing the
given information. Cultural awareness and competence is a stepping stone to understanding
cultural diversity and its impact in the workplace, especially in healthcare.
The basic elements for the diversity training will be the following:
• Cultural awareness in the workplace
o Identifying the organization values
o Gender gaps
▪ Antisexist
▪ Sexual orientation and gender identies
o Age discrimination
o Microaggressions
• Effective communication
• Understanding biases
• What to do if you see discrimination
• How to contribute to workplace inclusion
• Regulations and Legislations such as the equal opportunity
Delivery of these elements is also important. We do not want staff going through the
motions of the diversity training. Engagement of the staff is vital to have a successful
training program. Gateway Healthcare is a large organization composed of three sites. It
likely be best to have a Hybrid of digital training with online modules and Interactive
training where staff can staff can simulate scenarios, quizzes, and games.
