Data Analytics Project/Project Scope
Key Performance Indicators
The proposed project focuses on causalities that take place because of
storms in the United States of America. Storms are regarded to be common
weather events that disrupt the lives of people in the affected regions. The
main focus of the project is on how intense storms contribute to the loss of
lives in the nation. Although such weather events also lead to damage to
property and livestock, the scope of the study is restricted to fatalities of
human beings.
The key issue that will be analyzed is associated with the deaths which are
caused by storms in the U.S.A. In diverse cities, people come across
different kinds of storms, such as tornadoes, hurricanes, and thunderstorms.
The damage that comes with such weather events depends on the intensity
of the storms. Weather-related fatalities are a chief source of concern in the
U.S. which increases the vulnerability of the residents (Weather-related
deaths and injuries. Injury Facts, 2021). In the project, the issue relating to
storm-related fatalities in the U.S.A will be analyzed thoroughly. c c c
The following Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) will be
measured to determine the achievement of the project
objectives:
Indicator 1 – The identification of ‘the specific kind of storm’
variable and its implication on the fatal nature of a storm.
Indicator 2 – The identification of ‘the specific location of
residents’ variable and its impact on the severity of the storm
and storm-related fatalities.
Indicator 3 – This indicator is related to the variable ‘the storm
path’ and its influence on the deadliness of the storm and the
damage that it can cause.
Indicator 4 – The next indicator is related to the variable ‘the
specific time of a year when a storm occurs’ and its effect on
the severity and lethal nature of a storm.
Indicator 5 – This KPI is related to the identification of wind
intensity or other severe weather elements that take place
during a storm and lead to fatalities. c
Project Importance
Planned Milestones
The project has been chosen since it concerns an important issue, i.e.,
storms that occur in the U.S.A. It is necessary to explore the issue in detail
The key milestones that will be carried out during the project
are gathering appropriate data relating to storm casualties in the

so that appropriate measures and action plans can be taken to mitigate the
severity of serious weather hazards such as storms. By taking suitable
measures, it will be possible to minimize the burden that arises in terms of
the loss of human lives.
The project is important because it can shed light on the serious impacts of
storms relating to casualties that take place annually in the nation.
Although it is not under human control to manage weather events, the
project will help to determine the severity of storms so that suitable
measures can be taken to curtain the damage in terms of fatalities.
Several stakeholders can derive value from the project. For instance, the
residents who are impacted by storms will be significantly benefited.
Similarly, people who live in areas that are highly prone to storms will also
derive benefits from the project. Professionals such as health care workers,
coast guards as well as meteorologists who operate in storm-prone regions
of the country can derive value from the project. If the study is successful,
then government agencies like National Weather Service and the National
Centers for Environmental Prediction can also be benefited from it.
U.S.A, submission of presentation on the project. Then
emphasis will be shifted to the data preparation stage, which
will involve data cleansing and its ultimate transition into
meaningful information.
The weekly readings will be completed in a timely manner so
that the learnings can be integrated into the study. Predictive
models will be used while working on the project so that a
thorough and in-depth analysis of the topic will be possible. c c c
Background
Proposed Data Sets
The storm-related topic has captured the interest of researchers for a long
time. A serious issue that many researchers have focused upon is false
alarms relating to weather hazards. According to Lim, on average, around
75 % of tornado warnings in the U.S.A are false alarms (Lim et al., 2019).
One of the data sets that will be integrated into the project is
National Weather Service storm data. The information that will
be captured will provide rich insight into historic storm events
in the U.S.A, including details on fatalities.

Due to the inaccuracy of predictions of major weather hazards, the public
fails to respond proactively when an actual threat arises. Simmons has
argued that false alarms give rise to the issue of slow response to warnings
which increases the vulnerability of residents who live in storm-prone or
tornado-prone regions in the U.S.A (Simmons & Sutter, 2009).
Numerous researchers have utilized data from National Weather Service
for predicting storms and other weather-related hazards. For instance,
Dymond has used information from National Weather Service and National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to make forecasts on floods
(Adams & Dymond, 2019).
By conducting the study, it will be possible to fill the gap relating to
making accurate predictions to differentiate between dangerous storms and
mild storms. So, it can help to minimize storm-related fatalities in the
U.S.A.
Another data set that will be used while working on the project
is the data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA). The details from this source will help
to get an integrated insight into storm-related events that have
taken place in the nation.

The project domain is meteorology. Meteorology can be defined as the
science relating to Earth’s atmosphere as well as its physical processes. A
meteorologist is a professional who works as a physical scientist and is
responsible for observing, studying, and forecasting the weather. Some of
the areas that are covered under the meteorology domain are tornados,
thunderstorms, and other weather-related events. Such natural weather
hazards significantly impact diverse life forms and property.
The main business objectives of the project have been presented below:
• To make a prediction on the possibility that a specific storm will
lead to causalities
• To help in the identification of five chief features that may make a
storm severe and deadly
• To minimize storm-related causalities in the U.S.A effectively
• One of the tools that will be used in the project is ‘R.’
With the help of this framework it will be possible to
carry out a broad range of activities like handling
missing values and feature creation.
• The data will be analyzed with the help of R and
Tableau. Both of the tools will help to understand the
data at an in-depth level by using the visualization
feature.
• In addition to these tools, SAS Enterprise Miner will be
used to import and prepare data so that predictive
models can be used on it. This tool has been chosen
because of its convenient nature and simple interface.
• Tableau will be used as the chief visualization tool,
which will help to view data in diverse visual forms.
Graphical representations can also be made using the R
tool. c
Success Factors
Data Analysis
The success of the study is directly connected to the identified Key
Performance Indicators (KPIs). The success factors of the project are
presented below:
It is expected that the outcome of the project will shed light on
the storms, especially their severity and fatal nature. The
detailed analysis of the collected information will be highly
insightful as it will help in simpler comprehension of storm

• The ability to recognize the effect of the variable ‘the specific kind
of storm’ on the dangerous or lethal nature of the weather event.
• The identification of the ‘the specific location of residents’ variable
and its implication on the storm severity and storm-related fatalities.
• The correct analysis of the role of the storm path and its impact on
its deadliness and the damage that it leads to.
• The in-depth insight into how the specific time of a year when a
storm occurs influences its lethal nature and severity.
• The understanding of how wind intensity or other severe weather
elements during a storm contribute to fatalities.
patterns in the United States of America, damage caused by
such extreme weather events, etc. The insight can help to
minimize the causalities that arise because of storm-related
events in the nation.
A broad range of variables or factors will be considered while
uncovering the fatality issue in relation to storms that take
place in the U.S.A. The variables that have been identified are
the specific kind of storm, the particular location of residents,
the path of the storm, the particular time of the year when a
storm takes place, and the impact of intensity wind or other
extreme weather elements on storm-related fatalities.
The detailed analysis that will be carried out while working on
the project will help to arrive at an appropriate conclusion in
relation to factors that lead to storm-related fatalities in the
United States of America. It can help to devise suitable
measures to be well-prepared and minimize the loss of life that
takes place because of storms in the nation.
