I disagree that accountants should focus on producing financial
statements and leave the design and production of managerial
reports to information systems specialists because the systems
should be made to meet the specific needs of an organization’s
activities. I believe there are no advantages to accountants just
focusing only on financial information. I believe that accountants
should be involved in producing reports that include more than just
financial measures of performance because they need to be sure that
information is reliable. Depending on the business some AIS might
need to be changed to fit the organization’s specific needs, and if the
design is left to the system specialists, the information could be
unreliable since they might not have been properly trained or be
aware of potential threats.
Enterprise resource planning systems are systems that integrate all
aspects of an organization’s activities into one system. An ERP
Facilitates information flow among the company’s various business
functions and manages communication with outside stakeholders.
(Romney, Steinbart, Summers, & Wood, 2020) I believe that
accountants need to be part of the whole process because they can
bring insight into the organization’s needs that the system specialist
may not be aware of. The accountants are the ones that would know
the procedures and reports needed, and they need to be part of the
implementation since they will need to adapt to the changes in the
business processes. If the accountants are part of the
implementation, they can see the system as a whole and see the
outcome which will lead to less resistance.
I believe there is always going to be resistance since people do not
like change and it is hard to convince people to change the way they
do their jobs and to be open-minded about a new procedure. At work,
we use QMF for a workstation that pulls information from our other
systems, and I recently made a new process using a new query that a
co-worker showed me, and the team member that is showed a little
resistance is a person that worked with it every day and has been
doing that job for four years, while the others who deal with it
occasionally prefer the new procedure since it saves time typing out
purchase orders. I do believe that top management’s commitment to
and support is necessary to increase the chances of success.
