The “Golden Age” of television is the era of live television with a variety shows.
The characteristics that marked this era is when advertisers sponsored these shows and
promoted themselves throughout the show with their brand of product (Straubhaar,
LaRose, & Davenport, 2017, p.9-1). According to author Straubhaar, LaRose, &
Davenport (2017), “On television today if we see a sponsor’s product during a portion
of a show this is called program placements” (p.9-1).
Today I would consider television to still have golden moments because you can pretty
much watch tv anywhere now with the internet. It’s the latest and greatest thing. It
doesn’t have to be on a tv set anymore, it could be a laptop or tablet.
Internet information readily available can be detrimental for individuals for case in
point, WebMD. Individuals use it all the time and I’m also guilty of it. When we feel
sick, we try to diagnose ourselves by looking up the information. In the end we now
are more scared to find out the real results of our sickness because we think its worst
than what it really is. WebMD will make you believe that you only have 24 hours left
to live. The internet can also be filled with filth and displeasing things to God.
Underage teenagers might be able to access tobacco products easily and cheaply
through the internet, researchers from the United States have found (Nursing Standard,
2004, p.10). There are also many predators out there, that prey on woman and child.
Our God tells us in Ephesians 5:4 Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude
joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving.
1. Discuss what was meant by the "Golden Age" of television. What characteristics marked this
era and how have things changed today? Do you still consider television to have any "golden"
moments today?
2. The Internet has given us search engines that take us to information, entertainment content,
public and private forums, DIY instructions and exploration all the world over. In what ways do
having all this information at one's fingertips improve one's life? In what ways is this easy
access to so many topics and sites detrimental?
The internet has improved one’s life tremendously with the internet at their fingertips. I
personally, am not good at math. But with the help of a couple YouTube videos and problems
worked out, I can be a master at it. The internet readily available can teach new tricks and trades
as well. If you need to replace a part on your car and you are handy at doing those types of jobs
then this could save you in the end thousands of dollars vs. taking your car to a mechanic just be
watching a few do it yourself videos.
3. How do you see the future of shopping changing as a result of the Internet? Consider
everything from products from around the world to getting your groceries or your pet supplies.

Time, convenience and not wanting to leave the house, shopping online will defiantly change
America. In its short history, the Internet has been repeatedly reinvented (Straubhaar, LaRose, &
Davenport, 2017, p.10-1e). The future of shopping on the internet is an open revolving door of
change every day. We can now order groceries online and have them delivered to our doorstep.
Author Forsythe, (2003) states that “The Internet, as the potential shopping mall of tomorrow
provides consumers with a number of benefits over traditional retail channels” (p.868). We can
trade, buy and sell in many countries but soon it will become easier and shipping speeds may
even be faster. The future of shopping will put many out of jobs and on the other hand more jobs
will be created because we will need someone to deliver our packages. This will
create disintermediation, eliminating distributors that serve as intermediaries between
manufacturers and their customers (Straubhaar, LaRose, & Davenport, 2017, p.10-4h). You can
almost order anything online from a pizza to a taxi driver or uber. Amazon has also come a long
way from just being a bookstore. This right here tells me that the internet has evolved and still is
continuing to put certain business out of storefront. The future of shopping will encourage some
and also intimidate some. Many will be intimidated by the dark web and that predators will have
easy of access to steal credit card numbers. Nations, including the United States, are behaving
badly online in other ways that affect the future of the Internet (Straubhaar, LaRose, &
Davenport, 2017, p.10-1e).
