THE NATIONAL
FOOTBALL LEAGUE
Why would the Department of Homeland Security
need to be engaged? For 2020, the Super Bowl
battle between the San Francisco 49ers and the
Kansas City Chiefs reached 102 million total viewers
(Adgate, 2020) (Herbet, 2020). The average
audience for the Super Bowl continues to reach
momentous numbers every year averaging 108.29
television viewers over the past decade (Super Bowl
Ratings History, 2020)

NFL MITIGATION
The mitigation of the National
Football League involves the action
of reducing severity and
seriousness, or any likelihood of
injury. The overall goal is to ensure
people can gather peacefully to
enjoy sports entertainment. The
Department of Homeland Security
partners with federal, state, and
local law enforcement officials to
secure operations surrounding the
stadium

WHAT AN AMAZING JOB THE DHS
PROVIDES
The Department of Homeland Security
does an amazing job training state and
local law enforcement; however, these
trainings are issued to the NFL's
organization to implement internally.
Employees of the NFL may not be
properly trained as they are not
partnering directly with DHS at every
checkpoint. There is a large amount of
trust placed in the NFL to provide the
proper trainings to staff. Unfortunately,
citizens are never as efficient as state
and local law enforcement officials when
handling disasters

THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND
SECURITY
The Department of Homeland
Security provides security
assessments and training to state
and local law enforcement, local
hotels, and other small businesses to
help identify potential risk and
threats. Then, procedures and action
items are discussed in the event an
incident occurs.

THE NATIONAL
PROTECTION AND
PROGRAMS
DIRECTORATE
The National Protection and Programs
Directorate places emphasis on bomb
prevention training and conducts several
Counter-Improvised Explosive Device
and Risk Mitigation Training events.
Active shooter workshops are held for
state officials, local officers, and all
stadium employees. The Federal
Protective Service provides protection to
all federal facilities in the metropolitan
area to make sure government business
and services continue normal
operations.

THE UNITED STATES CUSTOMS AND
BORDER PROTECTION AND IMMIGRATION
AND CUSTOMS ENFORCEMENT
This reduces the amount of counterfeit
merchandise sold to fans to ensure
people are purchasing official National
Football League paraphernalia. Secret
Agents from ICE Homeland Security
Investigations assist with the
apprehension of criminals distributing
counterfeit merchandise. Customs and
Border Protection officers conduct a non-
intrusive inspection of all equipment and
cargo entering the stadium for
contraband. Contraband can be inclusive
of narcotics, weapons, or explosives.

B Checks
Thorough background checks of all attending
employees would need to be conducted before
employment and Super Bowl events. In many
cases, the incident begins with someone that
was inside the organization and had clearance
access to restricted areas. People receive bribes
or are placed in positions for years before a strike
occurs. Better screenings should be implemented
before Super Bowl events. Employees should be
met with the same security standards as guest
before entering the establishment instead of
waving a badge for quicker access to the facility.
