End of Semester Reflection
Over the course of this semester, I have grown so much as a reader and writer. I have
learned a lot of new grammar knowledge. For example, there are many types of sentences such as
simple sentences, compound sentences and complex sentences. I have learned these new
sentence types, how to use them and apply them appropriately in learning and in life. English does
not simply have one type of sentence structure, but it has many variations to create a lively essay.
There were many other lessons that we learned about in this class.
In the beginning of the semester, I was unsure about how this class would turn out. In the
past my English classes were used to improve my vocabulary and grammar, and that's what I
expected this to be my goals for this class. I expected that I would be able to develop and improve
different aspects of the English language such as reading, writing, speaking, pronunciation and
grammar. I was overall satisfied with the proceedings of this class. However, there were a few
things about the class that I was not thoroughly thrilled with. These things were small, yet
probably should be addressed in some form or another. Starting with the use of Khan Academy.
This was my first time using this online educational tool and I must say that I really didn’t like.
There were aspects of this online tool that was very beneficial, but I had a hard time
understanding the grading system. Because of this I was always concerned whether or not the
instructor was receiving a grade for me. Again, with some minor adjustments this class still offered
so much knowledge and information.
The three assignments that stood out to me most would be the: (1) Midpoint Reflection;
(2) Learning New Words; and (3) Cliché Assignment. I feel that the Midpoint Assignment was a
great opportunity for our instructor to take a moment and check in with their students experience
so far. Sometimes this reflection can help the instructor reflect on their teaching practices and
make adjustments. The Learning New Words Assignment was very interesting, because I’ve
never used some of the words on the list. The assignment went into details because we had
define each word as well as used the word in a sentence. Focusing on vocabulary is useful for
developing knowledge and skills in multiple aspects of language and literacy. This includes
helping with decoding, phonemic awareness, and phonics, comprehension, and fluency. Learning
vocabulary is a continual process of language and literacy development, which begins in the
early years of life, and continues through schooling and beyond. I really enjoyed the Cliché
Assignment. Clichés are expressions that either have a general meaning or have lost their
meaning over time. I feel that cliches are very innovative way of expressing yourself.
In this class, I have learned many valuable information that will prepare me for my
future. Through the course of this semester, I have been able to develop and refine my English
skills. Grammar is something that I now had the opportunity to enrich and pay more attention to.
Grammar is the study of how sentences mean. And that is why it helps. If we want to understand
the meaning conveyed by sentences, and to develop our ability to express and respond to this
meaning, then the more we know about grammar, the better we will be able to carry out these
tasks. I am more present in my writings now, paying more attention to my word choices and
sentence structure. The importance of having and exercising this skill has become clear to me
through this class. The skills I have learned in this class are invaluable moving forward. In the
future I feel confident that any papers I may need to write I will be able to handle the assignment.
This class has help me in my career field. Good grammar in the workplace is an essential
tool when conveying ideas and information with precision, clarity, and professionalism. With
email, texting, and tweeting on the rise, it is not uncommon to hear or see a coworker or boss
using incorrect grammar rules and spelling. Grammar studies the rules and structure of language,
including parts of speech, sentence structure, and punctuation. Learning grammar is essential
because it helps one communicate clearly and effectively with others in any situation. With this
English knowledge, my communication skills have been polished up far more than I could
imagine. I can connect with those around me in an easier way with my words.
