Writing Prompt: A comparison piece compares and contrasts two closely related topics,
focusing on the similarities/differences of the two subjects. In the four steps that follow, choose
two concepts or items that are similar but not the same, brainstorm, and write a paragraph
comparing the two topics.

Step 2: Comparison Paragraph Rough Draft
Directions: Write a rough draft that follows your outline, beginning with your topic sentence. Do
not worry about spelling or grammar; just let your thoughts flow. Use transitional phrases such
as “On the other hand” or “Similarly” to show contrast or comparison. End with a good
concluding sentence that restates the significance of the similarities or differences. It must be at
least 200 words, no less and not too much more.
There are a lot of differences living in the South versus living in the North. One of the
major things that is different when living is the South as oppose to the North is the weather. In
the south the weather doesn’t change as much as the North. The Northern weather that you have
are four different seasons (Fall, Winter, Spring, Summer). In the South the weather stays mostly
warm even when it’s cold in the North. Another difference between living in the South and
North is the costing of living. Typically renting an apartment in the South will cost you between
$300 to $1200, while living in the North it will costing you anywhere between $1200 to $2000
for a one to two bedroom apartment; Also, the cost to buy a house in the South is a lot different
from that of the North. For example, a 4 bedroom with 2 ½ bathroom on 1 acre of land could
cost you $400,000 in the South and would cost at least 1.5 million in the North. Lastly, the
attitudes of people are different in the South from the North. In the South people show more
respect towards each other which is called Southern Hospitality; where as in the North people are
very rude and have little respect for one another. With all the differences being mentioned
above, it is better living in the South.
