Question 1
Communication is defined as “a process by which information is exchanged between
individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior” (Communication).
Communication is one of the most necessary aspects in life. Without the ability to communicate
with others, our lives would be extremely complicated and frustrating. People would be more

impatient and less accommodating, and people would be less likely to want to be around each
other. I am an impatient individual as it is, so I know I would have been even worse as a child if I
had trouble with communicating what I wanted and needed. I know I would have been very
frustrated. I also would not want to be bothered, and I would want to be left alone. I would have
been antisocial and withdrawn from my surroundings. I am so grateful that I can communicate
with others because my life would have been very different and much more difficult than it was.
Question 2
Tyler started as nonverbal autistic child when he became Ms. Whitney Meade's student.
Ms. Meade, Tyler's Learning Support Teacher, started Tyler with a Picture Exchange
Communication System (PECS) when she first met him in his kindergarten class. This is a very
common method of communication with autistic children. It uses pictures to help nonverbal
children communicate with others about specific items. She uses the PECS with popcorn and
pretzels to make snacks - something that children that age love. The PECS helped Tyler to learn
the words, as well. Now, he can tell his teacher that he wants more pretzels.
They also use sign language in the classroom to help with children who have a hard time
using words to communicate. Sign language is a great communication tool for everybody,
impaired or not. Anybody can learn it, and if everybody made an effort to do so, communication
with people with disabilities would be easier to accomplish and understand.
The Speech and Language Pathologist also suggests other common approaches when
trying to communicate with young students with disabilities: slow down, use less words, give the
child time to respond, and do not draw attention to the student’s disability or allow others to do
so.
Question 3
As I have stated before, I was raised in a Christian household, but I do not currently
practice. Therefore, I do not believe religion should have anything to do with education. I do not

think I need to be a Christian to be an effective teacher. I will be a great teacher one day, and I
will not need Christianity or the Bible to do so.
