What is the correct context for the speech? Where and when will it be given?
I will be giving a speech at a coworker’s retirement party congratulating him on his years
of work for the police department we work at.

Who is the audience and what are their characteristics?
The audience will be fellow officers at the department. They are people who enjoy being
upright members of the community and serving others.

Why has the audience come to hear the speech?
It is a coworker’s retirement party and the speech is a tribute to him.

What are the interests of the audience?
Various but they are all fellow policemen who care about upholding the law.

What does the audience know about your topic?
They know the person that I am speaking about and what accomplishments he has.

They are sad to see the coworker retiring but happy to get a chance to celebrate him.

Happily, as it is a chance to look back on their coworker’s career and what he did.
Purpose

What do you want your audience to know?
That my coworker had an incredible career, was a great man who accomplished many
things in his life, and he loved being of service to and protecting the people around him.

That our retiring coworker had a good career and he served the public well throughout
his years.

That they will miss the retiree and he was someone who made their days better.

What do you want your audience to do?
Let the retiree know that he will be missed and they appreciate his years of service to the
department and all that he did.

What is the most important message of your speech?
That my coworker was an amazing member of the police force and should be shown
respect and honor for his service.

Why should/will your audience care about your message?
Because they worked with the man for many years and will likely miss him. Additionally,
they are showing their respect to him for all that he accomplished and that they
appreciate what he did greatly.

Are your audience, purpose and thesis aligned? Why or why not?
Yes they are because it is an emotional event honoring a coworker for his years of
service.

What did you learn from this experience?
That there is a lot more to planning a speech than I previously thought there was and it is
vital to properly prep for it.
