Student-Athletes
Soria, K.M. (2023). Disparities in college students’ access to academic advising during the
Covid-19 Pandemic. NACADA Journal, 43(1), 17-30.
This article focused on the in equities facing college students and their access to
academic advising during the pandemic. Soria, discusses that students historically from
marginalized identities in higher education were most likely to lack access to academic
advising during the pandemic. This created an even more gap in the equity of their
education. This article brings to light the inequities in access to academic advising that
existed before and during the pandemic. This article discussed how the pandemic
contributed to the equity issue in education of low income and working-class students.
This article will beneficial to my research paper in adding to the discussion of inequity
that existed before the pandemic and increased during the pandemic.

experiences of high school students in semi-rural Georgia. Journal of School Health,
93(4), 257-265. https://doi.org/ 10.1111/josh.13269
The authors’ research detailed the impact that the Covid-19 pandemic had on the
education of high school students in rural Georgia. The inequities of students existed not
only during the pandemic but before the pandemic. The discussion of inequities regarding
technology, internet access and support lead to a negative effect on the students’ overall
academic achievement. The authors’ research detail the academic loss suffered by
students due to the pandemic and also brought to light the academic inequities that
existed based on race, geographic background and economic status. All these factors

contributed to inequities beyond a student being a student or even a student-athlete. The
emergent transition to online learning while dealing with a nationwide pandemic and
shutdown, was truly impactful for certain groups of students. The various learning
modalities, the access to certain educational instruction and social economic inequities
lead to a negative effect on academic performance. This research is very important to my
paper because it adds to the discussion of inequities in education that were increased
during the pandemic. Adding another piece to the stressors and factors that effected
students and student-athletes during the pandemic.

academic success and persistence of collegiate student-athletes. NACADA Journal, 39
(1), 49-59. http://doi.org/10.12930/NACADA-17-044
This article discusses the role academic advising plays on the success of student-athletes
in college and their overall academic experience. The authors discuss how much
academic success is a major component of the success of Division 1 institutions. The
authors discuss what the academic requirements of student-athletes are and how they
must balance their sport and their schoolwork to be successful. By providing the average
amount of hours student-athletes participate in addition to academics and schoolwork
they must do, it gives us as readers and insight into the balance needed for student
athletes. This journal article is beneficial to my paper in that it gives an overall view in to
the life of student-athlete and the schedule and routine they maintain as student-athletes.
Additionally, it gives way to my research in exploring how the pandemic impacted the
life of student-athletes. With the added stressor of a pandemic, this had a major effect on
the academic and athletic success of the student-athlete.

The authors discuss how academics of students were impacted during Covid-19 and how
the students learned, and which modality was used impacted their overall success.
Students took classes either in a hybrid/virtual mode and some were allowed to take some
classes in person during the pandemic. The discussion of which learning modality yielded
greater academic success was discussed in addition to who had access to these methods.
The authors allowed for the discussion to explore inequity in who had access to certain
learning modalities during the pandemic. Learning virtually was a challenge for all
students regardless of location or social economic status. This article is very beneficial to
my paper in that is specifically discusses the negative effect on the learning of high
school students. This paper also provides the necessary information on how taking
classes via different modalities affects the learning and academic achievement of
students. For my hypothesis of my research paper, this article helps support my position
that Covid 19 negatively impacted the student achievement of student-athletes while
bringing to light the massive inequities in education.

ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPY
The authors here discuss the impact of the pandemic on college student’s emotional well-
being and particularly their belonging and loneliness. The mental health of students was
greatly impacted due to the pandemic, this article focused on two factors that impacted
college students during this time. The authors discuss how the pandemic significantly
disrupted the education of college students. Because classes were virtual and remote,
students felt a lack of connection with their peers. Mental health issues and loneliness are
not uncommon in college and the authors discuss how the pandemic played a role in the
increase of these factors during the pandemic. Another key point the authors, of this
article, bring to light, is that young men are most vulnerable to feelings of loneliness.
This led me to think about the many student-athletes who are male and how this may
have affected them even more during the pandemic. This article is important to my paper
because it takes a view on how mental health impacted students during the pandemic and
how it affected their academic success.

The authors discuss the impact of emergency remote education that took place due to the
pandemic. athlete must participate in to be successful. In this article, the mental health
and stress related worries and factors were also discussed. Despite, the already
established, technology and equipment prior to the pandemic, the pandemic still
presented stressors to the education field. The article also discussed inequities that existed
in the learning atmospheres are students during the pandemic which added to the

inequities and stressors of learning remotely. This article does use the research of authors
and students in Germany but, it can be speculated that this are similar feelings that could
be found in the students of USA colleges and institutions as well. This article tried to
answer the question of how ready students and educators were when the pandemic took
place for emergency remote teaching and education. This article is helpful to my research
in that it gives a continued look into the disparities in education that took place for
students even outside of the country. This article confirms that the pandemic and remote
learning had negative effects on students’ academic success including to their mental
health.

The pandemic affected many people in several ways and for student-athletes it was an
even bigger impact. The academic and athletic stressors that were already facing student-
athletes prior to the pandemic were explored in this article. The authors discuss student
athletes from a Swedish sport secondary school. The pandemic contributed not only to
academic stress but also to sports related stress. Students, in the article, expressed
challenges in handling sports, school and social life. The student athletes had difficulties
coping with their new life situations revaluating and longing for social life while handling
the responsibilities they faced as student athletes. The authors, in this article, also take
into consideration the teachers’ perspective regarding the pandemic and their students.
They contributed that the pandemic brought major challenges and experiences of

increased inequality in education, especially concerning the vulnerable populations. The
restriction to participate in sports contributed to the risk factors for mental health issues in
the student-athletes as well. This article is a great resource for my paper because it covers
not only the academic stressors and athletic stressors student athletes faced during the
pandemic but also spoke to the inequity of education that continued to rise. This article
also supports my hypothesis that student-athletes were negatively impacted academically
by the pandemic.

For academic achievement. Ilkogretime Online, 20(4), 1452-1457.
https://doi.org/10.17051/ilkonline.2021.04.166
The authors discuss how online learning and the pandemic impacted student academic
performance and success. To understand academic success we have to understand
academic achievement. Due to the major factor of the pandemic, concerns were raised
and student’s academic achievement was truly impacted. There were gaps in learning and
education and it resulted in the negative impact on academic success. Another major
factor was the self-efficacy of the students during this time. Many students lost their
desire to learn and to achieve because of the mental health stressors that played a role in
their lives during the pandemic. The insights discussed, in this article, helped explain the
additional factors that faced students during this time and greatly impacted their academic
performance. This research will help my research paper in adding to the explanation of
how the academic achievement of students and student-athletes were greatly impacted
and in a negative way. This article also bringing to light the discussion of self-efficacy.

framework to expose educational inequity.JAERA Open, 7, 1-18.

The Covid-19 Pandemic brought to light many disparities when it comes to education and
the policies that existed concerning students. The author focuses on the particular
population of low-income students of color. Covid -19, according to the article, deepened
and increased the social inequities to the negative effect of low-income communities of
color. The author examined the inequities and the limitations of the law in a time of crisis
during the pandemic. Low-income students and people of color had job challenges, some
lost their jobs and insurance, some had unstable internet connections and lack of devices.
This all contributed to the inequity of education. These inequities were visible prior to the
pandemic but, it was deepened during the pandemic. This article is beneficial to my
overall research because it discusses the laws and policies that were established before
the pandemic that contributed to inequity in education before and during the pandemic.
Additionally, this research brings to light the many different stressors that low-income
students of color faced during the pandemic. It is helpful to then understand the extra
layer of being a student-athlete, as a individual of color, and all that impacted them
during the pandemic.

This article focused on the negative impact of Covid 19 and in particular the lockdown on
the mental health of student athletes. The study of this article takes place in Spain but can
be attributed to student-athletes all over the country. The authors discuss the dual career
demands of student-athletes and what they faced mentally prior to the pandemic. So,
adding the pandemic increased and further increased any negative experiences they were
experiencing due to added stressors. Lack of training facilities, lack of consistent
practice or workouts with their teammates, impacted student-athletes during the
pandemic. The authors conducted a study that studied, in particular, the negative impact
of the Covid 19 lockdown on student-athletes life spheres. Life spheres included Dual
Career (studies, sport, social life), Health (physical and mental health), Rest and recovery
( sleep quality and recovery from training) and Economy(financial situation). This article
helps my research in that it takes into account the wholistic life of a student-athlete and
all they face in their roles and what the pandemic added to them when it came to
stressors.
