Chapter 15. Observe: How to Make Accurate Observations (120 Words)
Attention to detail can either make or break you when it comes to making
accurate observations. When studying, it is important to read the passage in its
entirety instead of speed-reading through it to find the big words. It is possible to
gain knowledge of the scripture and to completely miss the understanding of it
when shortcuts are taken. Everyday Bible Study says “When we make
observations, we are looking for elements of structure, relationships, parts of
speech, and grammar. We are also asking basic investigative questions to
answer the who, what, where, when, why, and how of a passage.”
(CartwrightHulshof, 2019, p. 92). Paying close attention, avoiding distractions
and taking good notes is conducive to making more accurate observations.
Chapter 17. How to Ask Key Questions (120 Words)
Asking key questions is vital to studying the bible. “Who” helps us look for the key
people in a passage" (CartwrightHulshof, 2019, p. 98). "What” questions, seek to
understand what is taking place in a passage of Scripture" (CartwrightHulshof,
2019, p. 98). The "when” of a text of Scripture helps to reveal the time of day, day
of the week, month, year, or perhaps a particular feast or festival. The “where” of
a passage is about location. (CartwrightHulshof, 2019, p. 98). The “why” question
can aid in both observation and interpretation. (CartwrightHulshof, 2019, p. 99).
Finally, answer the “how” question by looking to the logical thought development
in the passage or the structure of the passage. (CartwrightHulshof, 2019, p. 100).

Chapter 30. Correlate: How to See Jesus in the Bible (120 Words)
Four features in the bible to help see Jesus! "Look for Stories That Are a
Reflection of the Grand Narrative of Redemption, Look for God’s Redemptive
Plan as It Is Found in the Promises Fulfilled by Jesus Christ, Look for New
Testament References to Old Testament Passages That Point to Christ’s
Redemptive Work, and Look for Typology That Points Forward to the Redemptive
Work of Christ" (CartwrightHulshof, 2019, p. 174). Stories paint the grand
scheme. Promises point to Jesus Christ and God’s redemptive plan. Connecting
the Old Testament and the New Testament will show it as one unified story.
Typology identifies a person or thing in the Old Testament as a type that points to
Christ in the New Testament.

Chapter 31. Apply: How to Live Out What You Learn (120 Words)
Application is the final step in studying scripture. This shows that you can put
what you have learned into practical action. Pastor and Bible scholar Daniel
Doriani believes that application must address the four basic questions that every
human being has (CartwrightHulshof, 2019, p. 176). These four questions can
guide us in living out the intent of the word. What actions must I practice or
avoid? Should I be the type of individual who chooses to do right? What am I
passionate about? How do I develop the ability to see things as God sees them?
"Discernment is being able to survey the sweep of culture and make a decision
that fits the perspective of God" (CartwrightHulshof, 2019, p. 179).
