Canvas no later than 12:00 PM on Tuesday, March 31st, 2020. Be sure to show all work and to
highlight your answers. You must complete and turn in this assignment individually; you are able to
work with one or two group members. If you work with group members, be sure that all names are listed
on the first page so we can evaluate plagiarism appropriately. This homework is based on lectures, class
discussions, course readings, and may require additional independent research.
Hints: Building enclosures and finishes were covered in the Building Enclosures and Interiors lecture. If
you are struggling, Chapters 16-18 and 22-24 of the textbook may be helpful. Of course, you can always
come to office hours for help.
1. What are the two classified types of roofs? Provide a brief description of each, as well as their
respective advantages and disadvantages. BE SPECIFIC! Use the table below to summarize
your answers. (10 points)

2. Do some research on the Vdara “death ray” that heated up a pool on the lot adjacent to Vdara.
(20 points)
a. Based on your research, why do allegations state that low-emissivity (low-E) glass more
often results in melting of vinyl siding than conventional glass? (10 points) The low E
glass has a thion layer of metal or metal oxide which helps the inside stay cooler in the
summer but warmer in the winter but can magnify the sun rays up to 200 degrees F and
Vinyl Siding melts at 140-170 degrees F.
b. Using this research, write a memo to your city councilperson (assuming that you live in
the 85287 district), stating a position either to ban low-E glass or continue using it in
housing construction. Be sure to include at least two citations. (10 points)
3. A new building is being constructed in downtown Tempe and they are considering using triple
pane glass. Would you recommend this? (1 point) I do not Why or why not? (4 points) Tempe
already gets hot enough outside by adding triple pane glass which contains Low E would
make the reflection of the sun heat up the surrounding areas making Tempe unbearably
hot which would then motivate people to move away from Tempe and having the city lose
money.
4. College Avenue Commons (CAVC) is ASU’s home for the Del E. Webb School of Construction
and for the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment.
a. What exterior features were incorporated into the design of CAVC to mitigate heat gain
within the building? Discuss materials and techniques used as well as the orientation of
these materials and techniques. (5 points) Concrete walls and Not many windows on
the south west side of the building there are also those coolers (forgot what they are
called but we have them in our room to create the cooler feeling with water).
b. The majority of the north-facing wall is made of up glass. What are two benefits to
using such a large amount of glass on the buildings exterior? (5 points) Better look and
allows just the right amount of heat and cold in. Also makes for a great view of A
mountain and the sky.
c. What methods may have been incorporated into the glass walls of CAVC to mitigate
heat gain within the building? (5 points) joint sealant
5. One method that we use to prevent moisture from penetrating through the building envelope is
joint sealing. Can joint sealants be solely relied on? Why or why not? (10 points)
Yes, and I say this because reading up many companies and business rely heavily on the
Joint sealants. Most joint sealants are also water proof so the moisture wont come into the
building.
