Creative Assignment 2 – Evaluate a residential landscape design
We all have different ideas of the perfect landscape design for a residential home. In
this assignment, you will be applying the principles of landscape design to a home
landscape that you enjoy to create a blog entry post in our courses blog section for
Creative Assignment 2.
1. The first step is to pick a residential landscape design that you like and to document
it as an image. This design can be a) a digital image that you captured using a cell
phone or camera of a home landscape in your area, b) a scanned image from a
magazine or book, or c) a high resolution image from the Internet. The image/design
MUST show the placement of landscape plants and other landscape elements in
relationship to the home or residence. Images of natural landscapes such as “my
favorite bit of scenery in Yellowstone National Park”, your grandparents’ ranch or any
other non-residential settings like the Desert Botanical Garden do not quality for this
blog assignment.
2. Once you have obtained your image, create a blog post entry within the
assignment blog created by the instructor, which contains your image along with
your written analysis of the home landscape with respect to the principles of
landscape design which you learned about in the Landscape Design topic. In this
document, you must answer the following questions about the residential
landscape design image that you chose. To receive full credit, these questions
must be answered in a blog format of 3 to 4 paragraphs of prose and NOT as a
‘list of answers’ to a ‘list of questions’. Please compose your text as a thoughtful,
well-written blog-grammar, punctuation, and correct spelling. Always review and
edit your work before submitting.
1. Why do you like the design of this particular residential landscape?
2. Does the design have a theme, and if so, what is the theme? (For example
southwestern desert, tropical, modern, English garden, western ranch, Asian
garden, Mediterranean, edible garden, butterfly and hummingbird garden,
etc.)
3. What is the focal point of your residential landscape design?
4. What landscape elements are used as accents?
5. What landscape elements are repeated in the landscape to bring unity to the
design?
6. Is the design balanced symmetrically or asymmetrically?
7. Is texture or color used to provide a sense of rhythm in the landscape?
Note: Digital images from the Internet may be used for this creative assignment BUT
they must be of very high quality, show the details of the landscape needed to evaluate

it with the questions above, and MUST be accompanied by an Internet citation of the
URL address from where the image was obtained. If the image inserted into the blog is
a scan, then a literature reference of the source from which the scanned imaged was
derived must provided in the blog entry at the end of the written text. Student’s failing
to given proper citation showing a valid URL address or literature citation is a form of
plagiarism and will receive NO credit for this assignment from the instructor.
If the image is an original taken by you, please indicate this in your text. This
indicates to the instructor that it is indeed your work and not copied from another
source.

NOTE: Full credit (25 points) will only be given to those who complete fully the
assignment as directed above.
Notable point deductions:
-2 points for improperly oriented images.
-5 points for every day late the blog is posted after the module deadline. (Late
submission starts at 5:01 p.m.)

Hello fellow ABS 360 classmates, above is an image of a Southwestern Desert landscape. I am an
Arizona Native who is currently living in New Orleans, LA where it is extremely green. My backyard
consist of some tropical landscape and in all honesty I am so tired of it. I never thought that I
would say this but I miss the desert, plants in the desert are in my personal opinion easier to
maintain compared to the greenery here in New Orleans. The curb appeal of this landscape really
reminds me of home.
This front yard actually has two focal points, first and foremost the focal point that caught my
attention were the cactuses. It draws in the attention with the use to two tall plants, then it brings
your attention back down to the rest of the landscape. Another focal point is the front door, the
paved walk way leads the eyes to beautiful arched wooden doors. This landscape is balanced out
by the use of the asymmetrical design. This is achieved because the plants used visually look the
same in color, size and even texture. The paved walk way that leads to the door also serves in the
affect which makes the design asymmetrical.
As far as bringing in unity, I think that this is achieved by the different succulents and cactaceaes
since they are a part of the same family the repetition is not overwhelming the space. Not only do
the plants bring in unity but also serve a sense of rhythm. The repetition is only used by color and
texture from the same family plants but aside from that each plant is different and provides a
unique purpose to the landscape. The pop of color in the yellow and the pink flowers create an
accent and contrast to the space.
