Management in a Union Environment
Select one Ted Talk about managing in the workplace (you can use one of the talks available at the link in the whiteboard area or you can find your own but it MUST be a Ted Talk video). View the Ted Talk video and then:
1) Include the link to your video, along with the video name and the name of the speaker.
2) Provide a summary of the video (this summary should be detailed and include the main and sub points of the talk).
3) Discuss how the leadership strategies presented in the video you viewed link to at least TWO concepts discussed in our text related to motivation, benefits OR incentives. Be descriptive and specific in your discussion.
4) Explain how the union collective bargaining agreements influence managers and/or employees on a day-to-day basis (and describe how the advice in the Talk might help a manager in a union environment).
Handling a Union Grievance
You are the general manager at the City Center Hotel. Sarah is a new manager in your housekeeping department. She is aware that your hotel has a collective bargaining agreement with a union. On busy days, Sarah decides it would help everyone if she helped to clean rooms. Housekeeping employees have filed a grievance saying that your hotel failed to abide by the conditions outlined in your collective bargaining agreement.
Do the employees in this work unit have a legitimate grievance? How would you know?
How could this issue have been avoided?
Describe how you (as the General Manager) would respond to the union when presenting your side in this case?
