5-2 Short Paper: Communication Disorders and ASD in School
Children with autism spectrum disorder and those with communication disorders often
exhibit some of the same common characteristics and needs, making it difficult to distinguish
between the two. Issues with word formation, stuttering, discrepancies in volume, non-
verbalization, avoidance of eye-contact, inattentiveness, and inability to follow directions are all
characteristics that can be exhibited in both individuals with autism spectrum disorder and
communication disorders. Individuals with both ASD and communication disorders also have
difficulties noticing speaking and facial cues such as satire and disconcertment as they tend to
misread voice tones and facial expressions. These characteristics can lead to individuals with
