template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information.
Describe which of Kübler-Ross’s stages of grief are most applicable to Jackie’s situation. Explain
your response.
[Jackie seems to be in the acceptance and depression stages of grief. Jackie is showing
characteristics of depression with regretting not to have contributed meaningfully to society.
Jackie shows the acceptance characteristics more than others because she has accepted that her
time is limited and is happy knowing that she has raised a good daughter.]
Explain how a person experiences Kübler-Ross’s stages of grief. Address the following in your
response:
oDoes a person move through the stages in a linear fashion?
oWhat have you read or experienced about grief to support your answer?
[The stages of grief are not experienced in a linear fashion, as everyone will experience grief
differently. For example, someone who just received a cancer diagnosis might go straight to
bargaining and looking to a higher power to change the situation. Whereas someone who has had
a terminal diagnosis for a good portion of time or only has a short time to live may go right to
acceptance. I am speaking from personal experience, as one of my best friends had diabetes and
kidney failure and we knew that without a transplant his time was limited and I accepted that at
any time he could be gone. We accepted that and tried to make the most of the time we had left.]
Explain why having a sense of cultural competence (empathy, respect, self-awareness, cultural
awareness, communication) could help Jamie be a more effective caregiver.
[Cultural competence is essential to being an effective caregiver in many ways. Empathy allows
Jamie to be understanding of one’s situation and feelings. Jamie must have respect for different
cultural backgrounds as her patients may have completely different beliefs and even
communication styles, not having respect for these things could lead to her patient feeling unsafe
or unheard. She must also be self-aware of her own cultural beliefs and of any biases she may
have due to her cultural upbringing and make sure that she doesn’t allow her own beliefs to
influence the care she gives. Communication is key for in any caregiver situation. Jamie must be
able to communicate efficiently and effectively with her clients and understand that different
cultures have different meanings for things, including nonverbal cues.]
Given your unique needs, desires, and aspirations, describe some things that you feel will provide
you with a sense of life satisfaction as you enter the later stages of the life span.
[I feel that one thing that will give me a sense of life satisfaction is watching my girls grow up and
begin their own lives and families. Knowing that I was able to raise them into amazing women who
live happy fulfilling lives is all that I can ask for.]
