Crime analysts are responsible for carrying out a broad range of investigation and field
support processes such as prevention of crimes, communicating relation activities, developing
and testing crime predictions and recognizing crime patterns and trends (City of simi valley, CA.

Prerequisites for the job
For becoming a crime analyst, one must possess the minimum education that is equivalent
to a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from an accredited college or university. The main course
may be related to criminal justice, police science or related fields (City of simi valley, CA. Home,
2021). Earning a Ph.D. in psychology can also add value to the educational qualification of a
person intending to work as a crime analyst.
A person must possess knowledge in the following areas to effectively perform the functions
of a crime analyst:
• Methods and techniques pertaining to data collection, statistical research, analysis and
investigation
• Insight into recent developments in geographical profiling, crime analysis and crime
prevention

A crime analyst is a part of the law enforcement industry. He may work along with other
professionals from the law enforcement department to carry out different statistical and crime
analysis for identifying crime patterns, trends, and probable suspects. The professional can play a
vital role at the local, state, or federal levels in creating statistics for in-house as well as city-wide
reporting requirements.
Connection to psychology
A crime analyst is related to psychology since he is responsible for studying the intentions,
thoughts, behavior or actions of criminals to locate patterns and trends. A significant function that
is carried out by a crime analyst involves criminal profiling, which helps to link the actions of a
criminal to a crime scene so that specific patterns can be identified (Mittal & Singh, 2016).

The job that is carried out by crime analysts is highly sensitive and graphic as it involves
crime. While uncovering some unsettling and disturbing elements, one may have to view crime
scenes or crime scene images. There are also chances of interacting with individuals who have
committed gruesome crimes. For dealing with such situations, a crime analyst must gear up to
keep his emotions under check so that the possibility of distress can be reduced.
3. Social awareness and conflict resolution
While engaging with criminals, it is necessary for a crime analyst to have high social
awareness so that the psychological makeup of a criminal can be understood in detail. Social
awareness is crucial to study the criminal behavior of criminals and to understand their reasoning
patterns. The insight can help adopt stringent measures to discourage criminals from committing
serious crimes.
4. Ethical judgment and empathy
Elements such as ethical judgment and empathy can play an instrumental role while
working together with other law enforcement officers to identify a suitable punishment for a
criminal. Empathy can help a crime analyst to understand which form of punishment is suitable
for which kind of crime. It can also help to ensure that ethical standards are adopted while
deciding such sensitive matters.
