5-2 Journal: GROW Model and Leading Others
Leadership can be defined as a social activity that involves exerting influence on others in
order to optimize their collective efforts towards the attainment of a specific objective.
Leadership is derived from the ability to exert social influence, rather than relying on authority or
power (Wilde, 2019).
I do not possess any official or formal position of authority. Yet I have the ability to
organize those around me to work as one team to accomplish a goal. People trust me to lead
based on my energy and the work they see me complete daily. I possess a remarkable ability to
identify and implement strategies aimed at effecting change, regardless of the context in which
such change is taking place. I am trustworthy and I believe this is the main reason others would
follow me as their leader. The establishment of trust in a leader is a crucial factor in fostering a
sense of loyalty among followers, and it is not to be underestimated.
First and foremost, it is imperative for a leader to effectively achieve desired outcomes
with a high level of excellence. I would motivate and inspire others to pursue my vision by
allowing them to see my level of commitment as well as my previous achievements. I care about
my coworkers and want to see them succeed. When team members see they are supported, it not
only enhances their level of engagement and productivity, but also increases their likelihood of
remaining in the company for an extended period of time. The act of listening to others is of
utmost importance. This demonstrates a genuine curiosity in the perspectives of others, as well as
a sincere concern for their well-being. Until you master the art of active listening you will never
be able to inspire those around you to action.
When I asked a trusted individual, “what is my greatest asset as a leader?”, I was
intrigued by their answer. He stated, “you’re great at preparations and also with taking the reigns
and making the magic happen”. I agree with this simple yet powerful assessment. I truly am the
queen of making preparations. I like to have the information early so that I can effectively create
a plan of action and then distribute the information to my team. I work hard to forecast and
diminish any possible bumps in the road. I do not shy away from taking the reigns and ensuring
things are accomplished in a timely manner. I do not like to sit back and wait for things to
happen. I am good under pressure, but I prefer to take over early and attempt to create a peaceful
event.
