Gateway health system has some major work to do in regards of
cultural diversity. Thankfully going forward is a plan for all new hires
to receive cultural diversity training. This also pertains to seasoned
staff as well as the training would be for all staff done in quarters.
Each campus has work that needs to be done.
• Onboarding for new staff will have several new my learnings
about the importance of cultural diversity. Along with utilizing
videos such as The Share Approach.
• The next part of the education plan is to use tools such as
cultural self-awareness (similar to the one we completed in
Module One) for staff to assess where they may need to make a
change and or room for improvement.
• Working with New Hires or hires in general having a peer-to-
peer relationship helps build more education for everyone so I
feel having a Cultural Diversity champion who educates
everyone monthly about the importance and facts of the
cultural diversity topic. b
• Educating staff on the importance of communication etiquette
amongst each other, and networking with each other no matter
the background, value and beliefs would be apart of this
education plan.
In the end driving home the fact that no matter where you come
from or your age, or the color of your skin that we are all humans and
are striving for the common goal of the needs of the patient.
Everyone has a place within this organization and should never feel
anything but proud of where they came from. Instilling that mindset
in the education plan and teaching that type of mind set I believe is
going to be the most instrumental in attracting diversity. Word of
mouth and having a platform such as this education plan is what will
draw candidates to Gateway.
I decided to really look into the ways that diversity can enhance the
quality and efficiently of the department. My source for this was
Harvard Business Review and that is where I found that people with
diverse backgrounds have the ability to alter the behavior of a
majority which leads to improved and accurate group thinking.
Having a diverse group within an organization brings a much greater
mindset change to everyone. Cultural diversity brings so much to the
table in regards to creative thinking, efficiency, and over all morale of
a team. Also, within this article I found that the organizations that
have the most diversity also are more innovative as well. b
