What are some of the unintended consequences of a felony conviction?
Aside from jail time, fines, and a permanent record, there are other unintended
consequences that result from a felony conviction. A primary consequence convicted
felons face is difficulty securing employment. Many places are not willing to hire
someone with a felony and has served time. Secondly, convicted felons also experience
challenges in finding housing for the same reasoning that employers will not hire felons.

Why is it a faulty assumption that offenders are a drain on the community?
It is a faulty assumption that offenders are a drain on the community because even while
being involved in criminal activities, offenders may provide important sources of support
for the community or its individual members. Furthermore, the point is not that they are
model citizens, but that they contribute to the support of the family and community
stability. If they are incarcerated, these resources are withdrawn, and they might not be
restored even after the offender is released because ties are loosened or broken beyond
repair.
