Nurse
Verbal
Therapeutic The nurse did not interrupt the client while he spoke.
The nurse asked the client if he was feeling any better which
shows her concern for the client.
The nurse asked the client “what exactly makes you say
that” giving the client a chance to explain his feelings and
concerns.
Shows professionalism by introducing herself and verifying
the client’s identity.
Non-therapeutic Giving personal advice by telling him how she felt when her
father passed away.
Telling the client that “things will get better soon” which is
false reassurance.
The nurse’s communication lacks understanding because
she is expecting the client to just focus on something else.
Asking the client“are we feeling better now?” instead of
how are you feeling today?
Alternate Response Encouragement: Offer encouragement to express his
feelings and concerns as to why he feels this way.
Ask open ended questions: This will allow the client to
explain or give reasons why he is feeling the way he does.
3
Non verbal
Therapeutic Records what client is saying by writing it down.
Siting face to face with the client at an appropriate distance.
Non-therapeutic Lacks empathy for the client and his feelings.
The nurse looking away and raising her eyebrows could
mean that she disapproves of what the client is saying.
4
Alternate Response Compassion: Show interest in what the client has to say by
listening carefully, showing empathy, or nodding.
Trust: Listen to the client’s concerns but do not make
promises because she may not be able to keep them.
Verbal communication: Speak clearly, watch tone and facial
expression, and use simple terms.
If I were in that situation, I would feel worst leaving that appointment than I did going in.
The nurse is not professional because she was not listening to what I had to say because she
asked the same question that was just explained and answered. She was distant, showed no
empathy or concerns, little eye contact, and it seemed like she just did not care about a person
that just said they felt like they are having a nervous breakdown. In a worst-case scenario, a
patient leaving an appointment like this can attempt suicide because they may feel like no one
