To be faithful to the text as it was originally written and to communicate
clearly with different approaches. King James is formal more of a word-for-
word type translation even though sometime difficult to distinguish the
meaning, you're left to study the text for yourself to discern what it means.
A functional approach take the words that are there and bring over the
thought faithfully. Vital for some it allows you to read the text and hear what
is being communicated in our own language and to readily grasp it and
understand it.
Assignment 1-2
1. a) Yes
b) The Basic Instruction Before Leaving Earth- in details of how you should live while on earth,
giving instructions so that you will be able to pass the test of life.
2.
a) Textual criticism is the study of these manuscripts in an attempt to
determine what the original reading actually was.
b)
Granted some things get lost in translation, or just omitted a verse
from manuscript to manuscript, when the original manuscript is no longer
in existence for translation. My goal is to relate to the most finding of the
original wording of the Bible. Not adding or taking anything away. Continue
to study and differentiate what is what. There will always be conflict of
determining which method is correct.
3.
a) When the wording from one language of which the Bible was
written is translated into another
b)
Because no two languages are the same, words mean
different things in different languages
c)
The formal approach tries to stay as close as possible to the
structure and words source language.
The more functional approach tries to express the meaning of the
original text in today’s language.
d)
The formal approach
