Sport Organization Revenue and Expenses on the Los Angeles Lakers
Executive Summary
The Los Angeles Lakers have built a financial juggernaut, driven by strong revenue from
media rights, sponsorships, ticket sales, and merchandising. In 2020, their total revenue was
approximately $434 million (Forbes, 2023). Media deals and sponsorships provide financial
stability, while ticket sales offer major upside in years with full attendance like 2019. Despite the
short-term income decline caused by COVID-19, the team's overall financial condition is still
quite robust. Profitability is impacted by industry-leading player pay and large revenue sharing
obligations on the cost side. Despite these costs, the Lakers have continuously produced a
respectable operating profit thanks in part to their strong revenue growth. The Lakers will
probably remain one of the wealthiest teams in the NBA because to the strength of their brand
and fan base.

Introduction
Among the most lucrative and successful teams in the National Basketball Association
(NBA) is the Los Angeles Lakers. With 17 NBA titles under their belt and a market cap of $5.5
billion, the Lakers are a well-known brand around the world and a significant force in the
professional basketball industry (Forbes, 2023). Based on the most recent information available,
this essay will examine the Lakers franchise's primary sources of income, significant costs, and
financial trends.
Main Revenue Sources
Media rights agreements, which include the Lakers' portion of the NBA's national media
contracts, are the Lakers' main source of income. The Lakers reportedly collected over $150
million from the NBA in 2019 for media rights (Forbes, 2023). Even if the team's share
decreased somewhat in 2020 due to COVID-related layoffs, its primary source of income
remains media sales. LeBron James and Anthony Davis are two of the team's biggest players,
thus Lakers games attract a lot of viewers and fetch big money for the networks that broadcast
them, including ESPN and ABC.
The next significant source is probably business partnerships and sponsorships, which
bring in about $150 million annually. According to Forbes (2023), the Lakers have a 20-year
naming rights agreement for Crypto.com Arena, which is allegedly valued at over $700 million.
Businesses who spend millions to be associated with one of the most well-known basketball
brands include American Express, Wish, and Toyota. Over the last several years, new agreements
have been inked, increasing sponsorship income.

The third main income stream consists of ticket sales and VIP seats. Estimates state that
the Lakers lost out on about $81 million in possible ticket sales in 2020 as a result of restricted
attendance brought on the COVID-19 safety measures (Shea, 2020). With their expensive tickets
and regular sellouts, Lakers tickets are the most sought-after attraction in the NBA in a typical
year, bringing in over $120 million. At Crypto.com Arena, hundreds of courtside seats and
opulent suites provide first-rate merchandise and profits. Moreover, merchandise sales generate
significant revenue probably more than $50 million annually. Due to the Lakers' well-known
brand, they can make a sizable profit from the selling of jerseys and other merchandise both
domestically in Los Angeles and internationally. Royalties on items are part of their agreement
with Nike.
Main Expense Items
Player wages, which came to over $115 million in 2020, are the Lakers' biggest cost
(Forbes, 2023). Along with other roster members, this includes the salary of stars like LeBron
James ($39 million) and Anthony Davis ($32.7 million). The Lakers have one of the biggest
payrolls in the NBA when things are going well; in 2019, that amount was about $150 million
(Forbes, 2023). Revenue-sharing payments to small-market teams are the next major expense.
Forbes (2023) projects that the Lakers will contribute around $49 million in revenue sharing in
2020. Under NBA policy, higher-earning clubs like the Lakers contribute to a fund that is
subsequently distributed to lower-earning teams. As a result, clubs in smaller markets are
supported, maintaining competitive balance.
Other major costs include employing staff for analytics, scouting, and coaching;
operating expenses for the venue; marketing; and player incentives and benefits. The Lakers use
a large and well-paid basketball operations crew to assist them excel on the court. In 2020, its
5
total operating expenses were projected to be $466 million (Forbes, 2023). The player salaries
and revenue sharing likely accounted for over 60% of the team's spending.
Recent Financial Trends
The Lakers had operational profits of nearly $100 million in 2019, but COVID-19
reduced their profitability (Forbes, 2023). The epidemic and the shortened 2020 season, which
was played in the Orlando bubble without fans, influenced gate receipts and some sponsorship
money. Despite these setbacks, the Lakers were still able to generate over $40 million in
operational earnings, indicating a robust profit margin. Another illustration of the Lakers'
revenue-based business strategy is the 2012 NBA lockout-shortened season. Due to the team's
shorter 66-game schedule, income fell, although it quickly rose after the season (Statista
Research Department, 2023). Revenue is predicted to recover after the COVID-19 epidemic and
hit 2019 highs.
Conclusion
The financial status of the Los Angeles Lakers is appropriate given their status as one of
the NBA's most prestigious franchises. Profitable television rights and sponsorship deals provide
the foundation with financial assistance, while a loyal fan base drives ticket sales and
merchandise income. The team's total worth is now above $5 billion, and it continues to rise
(Forbes, 2023). The Lakers might continue to be a major force in the sports industry with smart
management and brand exploitation.
