Introduction
In 2016, professional tennis player Maria Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam champion,
tested positive for a banned substance and was subsequently suspended from competition for two
years, reduced to a 15 month ban after a court appeal. After an investigation the court found that
Sharapova’s guilt was not total, as the substance she tested positive for had not been an illegal
substance in the past. The drug that Sharapova was taking had been prescribed to her by her
doctor for various medical reasons for many years and was not considered a performance
enhancing drug until January 1, 2016. Due to the suspension, the tennis star missed the 2016
Olympics in Brazil, the U.S. Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and other international
competitions (Champion Jr., Karcher, & Ruddell, 2020).
Issues
Sharapova and her team claimed that the International Tennis Federation failed to
communicate with athletes that they had banned this specific drug, meldonium, therefore
increasing the possibility of athletes failing the drug test. The drug had previously been permitted
and was one that Sharapova took routinely for roughly 10 years before this incident. Due to the
