Philosophical Anthropology Assignment
Definition of Philosophical Anthropology
By definition, Philosophical Anthropology is a discipline that aims to understand the
essence and nature of human beings. The discipline probes and seeks to resolve critical questions
regarding what it means to be a human being, examining aspects like morality, identity, and
consciousness (Entwistle, 2021).3
Psychological Understanding of Philosophical Anthropology
Psychological approaches to philosophical anthropology are concerned with
comprehending human emotions, behavior, and cognition through scientific and empirical
methods. Essentially, psychology deals with how human beings interact, learn, and develop
within their surroundings (Entwistle, 2021). Moreover, it offers intuitions on personality
development, mental processes, as well as on how ecological and biological factors affect the
environment.
Psychology provides a number of diverse contributions to philosophical anthropology. To
begin with, it offers a comprehensive understanding of illnesses, particularly mental health
disorders. In so doing, it provides therapeutic approaches of addressing such psychological
problems (Entwistle, 2021). Additionally, psychology looks into the cognitive functioning and
development, offering a detailed analysis of how human beings solve problems, perceive, and
think. Importantly, psychological theories, for instance, Piaget theory by Sigmund Fraud,
provides a structure for understanding the unconscious mind and personality development, both
which are not typically dealt with in detail in Christian theology.
Theological Understanding of Philosophical Anthropology
3
Christian theological point of view about philosophical anthropology deals with
understanding the nature of human beings from a spiritual and religious perspective. Specifically,
theology looks into human beings in terms of how they relate to God, stressing aspects such as
redemption, soul, and sin (Entwistle, 2021). It emphasizes and seeks to resolve aspects of
morality, spirituality, and the afterlife. As stated in Genesis 1:27, "So God created man in his
own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them."
Christian theology offers different contributions that are not in psychology. To begin
with, Christian theology provides a detailed exploration of the human soul as well as its eternal
destiny, something that is not explored in psychological theories. Moreover, theology is more
concerned with the aspects of original sin as well as human weaknesses, providing an ethical and
spiritual background for understanding human weaknesses and the need for redemption
(Entwistle, 2021). Importantly, theology offers insights into the meaning and purpose of life,
based on religious canons and beliefs about divinity, which are not often covered in
psychological studies.
Comparison and Reconciliation
Without a critical lens, both perspectives (psychological and theological) on
philosophical anthropology appear to be opposed and irreconcilable. Whereas theology relies on
spiritual experiences, faith, and doctrines, psychology is based on scientific methods and
empirical evidence (Entwistle, 2021). Still, there as possible areas of complementarity and
reconciliation.
The two perspectives can be reconciled by recognizing that they deal with dissimilar
aspects of human existence. While psychology emphasizes observable aspects of human
behavior, theology focuses on the spiritual dimensions.
4
The two viewpoints can also be reconciled by integrating a perspective that takes care of
both spiritual and empirical ideas. For example, pastoral counseling integrates theological
guidance and psychological principles to offer a holistic understanding of those suffering from
spiritual and mental problems. Such an inclusive approach underscores the need to appreciate
both spiritual fulfilment and psychological well-being.
