Prenatal Devlopment Reflection Essay

When it comes to the study of human life, prenatal studies are more crucial than people
realize. Human embryologists, a person who studies early stages of human implantation, have
their work cut out for them as this is no easy job to do. Tracing human development is so much
more than just that, as it also involves stem cell science, human cloning, abortion, and so much
more that is involved and factored into this category as well. Which is exactly why the study of
prenatal development is so important.
As we have learned, in order for fertilization to be accomplished, a mature sperm and a
mature oocyte are both needed (International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy, Volume
19, Numbers 3-4, 1999). Before fertilization occurs, the sperm and the oocyte both have 23
chromosomes a piece, and they both possess “human life” since they are both parts of a living
human being. However, after fertilization occurs, it then can be considered a human being, as it
then has the 46 chromosomes required of it. Also, immediately following the fertilization
process, it then starts producing human proteins and enzymes that will direct his/her further
growth and development as a human. Which is why it should be considered and looked at as a
new, genetically, unique, live human individual (International Journal of Sociology and Social
Policy, Volume 19, Numbers 3-4, 1999) from that point on.
Although there are still some people who still see things differently, and think that abortions
are okay to have done and that they are not murder. They don’t consider it to be alive or a human
being since it is not fully developed yet. They see it as being only a “blob” or just parts of a
human, but not a human being itself and definitely not human life a all.
The strongest argument in my opinion is that human life begins the moment of conception.
When it stated that “the product of fertilizaion is a living human being with 46 chromosomes”, it
doesn’t matter how you try to look at it or break it down, that is exactly what it is without a
doubt. From that moment on, it will develop into a person more and more until birth. If we
remember what it says in John 3:6, “that which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is
born of the spirit is spirit.”
