JOURNAL ENTRY 3
Introduction
This week's topic on sex, sexuality, and gender identity allowed me to view the concepts
from a different preview. The videos confirmed some of my beliefs as well as provided me with
new and relevant information I was unaware of. From the class discussions, I was able to gain an
understanding of some of the viewpoints of my classmates through their initial posts, the way in
which they replied, and the supporting facts they cited. Some of the points I agreed with from the
videos include the concept that sex begins in the head. Dr. Fabrich notes there is no need to have
sex and still produce an orgasm as he referred to the concept that an individual may experience
an orgasm by simply stimulating the brain with electrodes. This concept that the sexual
experience beings in the brain are highly supported by several studies that have elucidated that
the desire for sex can be commonly characterized “as the presence of sexual thoughts, fantasies,
and motivations to engage in sexual behavior in response to relevant internal and external cues”1
Furthermore, it is well documented that the complex, primitive and versatile sexual behaviors of
humans are mediated both by subcortical structures, such as the brainstem, hypothalamus, and
spinal cord, as well as several cortical brain areas which cooperatively operate to keenly adjust
the sexual response. Desire, arousal, and ultimately orgasms, yet not fully understood, also
involve communications of the somatic and autonomic nervous systems. At the central level,
dopaminergic and serotonergic systems along with, cholinergic, adrenergic, and other
neuropeptide transmitter systems have been reported to provide significant contributions and
play crucial roles in various factors of sexual response.1
An additional concept I agree with from the videos surrounds artificial insemination and
the perpetuation of a lack of fathers as a result. As such, Dr. Farbich begged the question of why
this method of conception would be so prevalent in society today. As affirmed by many literary
2

journals, I too deem that Artificial insemination precipitates children without paternity, with
subsequent negative cultural and legal consequences among others. The wide range of negative
outcomes due to children being raised fatherless includes an elevated risk factor of two to three
times that of children being reared with a father present, including poor educational performance
and increased rates of high school dropouts, teenage pregnancy, and/ or becoming a juvenile
delinquent. This is further supported by the National Principals Association Report on the State
of High Schools which indicated 71% of all high school dropouts emanate from fatherless
backgrounds. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the National
Center for Health Statistics, these fatherless children are further exposed to a dramatically vaster
risk of abusing drugs and alcohol, suicide, and developing a mental illness2. A study conducted
by the Centers for Disease Control reported that 85% of all children who exhibit behavioral
disorders originate from fatherless households3.
Moreover, some children birth as a means of artificial insemination tend to display the
desire to locate their biological fathers. Several studies reported that study participants expressed
heightened interest in and or seek out their biological fathers after proclaiming their disdain for
them at the age of 18 and had lived most of their lives having no knowledge of the other half of
their origins. It is evident that the lack of natal fathers and their continued presence during
childhood bears significant negative impacts on an individual’s ability to navigate social cues
within society and/ or are incapable of maintaining effective, healthy, and beneficial relationships
as an adult. To this point, it has been found that females residing with non-natal fathers such as
boyfriends or stepfathers are exposed to an increased risk of experiencing sexual abuse when
compared to girls who resided with natal fathers. As well daughters raised by single mothers are
shown to marry as teenagers at a rate of 53% higher than normal, are 111% more likely to bear

children during adolescents, experience premarital births at an increased rate of 164%, and show
a 92% elevation in the dissolution their perspective marriages. In a final point to this concept, the
Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology published a longitudinal study in which researchers
observed: “greater levels of aggression in boys from mother-only households than from boys in
mother-father households”.4 This leads me to a further concept presented in the assigned videos
which I support. Dr. Fabrich spoke about being Made in the image of God and the fact that all of
humankind should be always protected. This particularly resonated with me as it relates to the
current social climate. Whereas situations occur that have individuals displaying a blatant
disregard for human life. Adding insult to injury, this disdain and discrimination are rooted in
hate for certain kinds of God people. A group singled out based on their skin pigmentation, not
by culture, moral values, and/ or any other characteristics. A case in point is the continued police
brutality, primarily perpetrated by Caucasian officers against Black residents. This is further
highlighted by the viral video which showcased a Caucasian officer leisurely pressed onto a
Black resident’s neck. With his hands in his pocket, he clearly exhibited no regard for him as a
person much less his life. Watching this enraged me! I could not and still cannot fathom why
there was not a more outraged call for the officer to be held responsible for his actions, even if
just a moral reprimand.
Not only did these videos affirm several of my beliefs, but they also exposed me to new
terminology, particularly the term “Malakos”. Described by the Greek/Hebrew definition to
“mean effeminate with respect to boys or men who take the role of a woman in homosexual
relationships.” However, the meaning of the term is translated differently many times. Examples
of these tend to agree with the founding principle that the referred individual(s) are males
engaged in differing forms of sexual activity. The New King James Version (NKJV) of the bible
4
JOURNAL ENTRY 3
describes the term to mean “effeminate … sodomites”5 compared to “men who practice
homosexuality” as the English Standard Version (ESV) depicts. Through notation, the ESV
further explains the Greek term translated by this phrase to refer to “the passive and active
partners in consensual homosexual acts.”6 This term stood out for me as homosexuality is a point
of contention not only in my life but in the lives many on a global scale. My position on the topic
concurs with biblical scriptures as in Leviticus 20:13 which states “If a man lies with a male as
with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death;
their blood is upon them.”5
Today, the topic of homosexuality continues to permeate differing cultures and has
depictions in movies, television shows, art, even children’s entertainment, and music. To this
point, Jamaican reggae, and dancehall international recording artist, among other things, Adidja
Azim Palmer, also known as Vybz Kartel, released his hit single “No Man” in 2010. One of my
favorite songs from the artist as the lyrics align with my beliefs and biblical teachings of
Leviticus 18:22 “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.”5 In his
song, Vybz Kartel elucidates his position on the topic, blatantly referencing Bible verses saying
“Leviticus 20 Verse 13
Say any man weh lie down wit' the next man
Hold on now
Dem a get too bright
Suh mi bun b****man and sodomite…
Dem thing deh wrong
'Cause if a man go lie down wit' another man
How di …. di baby born??”7

Here, as well as prior agreeing with the teachings of Leviticus, I agree with Vybz Kartel’s
standpoint. Specifically, his position is that engaging in homosexual acts would not allow for
procreation, in my opinion, persons perpetrating such acts are indeed acting outside the
accordance of the way in which God intended for humankind to live. Mark 10:6-9 - But from the
beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore, a man shall leave his
father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’5 My stance is
further supported by Genesis 1:28 ESV “And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be
fruitful and multiply and fill the earth…”5
Lastly, this week’s discussion post allowed me to gain an understanding of several of
my classmate's perspectives on certain aspects of the topic. Yet, it was our differing ideologies
that intrigued me most and provoked a further examination of their position. Of the varying
analysis of the cases presented this week, the analysis of one classmate in a particular case
resonated with me. In her initial discussion, my classmate Asmita positioned that “For minors or
underage patients, prescribers should not prescribe any medication without their parent’s
consent, underage patient parents must be informed by prescribe about their child's health and
medication.” This premise differed from mine prompting me to inquire into this guidance,
asking, would a physician now allow the patient to leave their office without any kind of
counseling, educational resources, and/ or prophylactic options such as condoms? For me, the
answer would be no. The reason being there is no guaranteed approach to impede teens from
becoming sexually active and as clinicians it is our moral and ethical duty to operate under the
ethical principles of Nonmaleficence and Beneficence, and the oath taken to do no harm. As such
should exhaust avenues and resources to accomplish this and provide prophylactic options such
as condoms even without parental consent while not crossing the line of criminality. Moreover,
