BOOK REVIEW: WEBB ASSIGNMENT 2
Abstract
Keith E. Webb authored a book entitled The Coach Model for Christians Leaders (2019), in
which he discusses the multiple aspects of being an effective coach. Throughout this article, he
explains the concept of coaching and provides beneficial strategies to utilize within the field. As
a result of the information contained within this article, I have invoked my own personal
reflections, as well as providing strategies that will enhance the field of life coaching in general.
This information provided can help others to become more effective coaches, as well as
providing guidance to those who are not yet in the field. Furthermore, it can also help to bridge
the gap between coaches and their clients, allowing for a more collaborative and successful
coaching experience.

Summary
In the book The Coach Model for Christians Leaders (2019), Webb identifies useful
practices and strategies to implement in the field of coaching. He explains To be an effective
coach depends on coaching mindset. Webb warns against “Know-it-all-ism” Which he explains
affects the way we process information (Webb, 2019, Chapter 1). He highlights the importance
for a coach to listen to others, ask questions, allow others to find solutions, and make people feel
empowered. Webb stresses the necessity of changing one is thinking to being an effective coach.
He goes on to mention the role of the Holy Spirit in the coaching field. The focus should be less
on the ideas and wishes of the coach, but on what the Holy Spirit wishes to accomplish in the life
of the coachee and facilitating that process, since sometimes our own advice and thinking can
cause a great deal of harm. According to Webb, the purpose of a coach is to listen, ask questions,
generate ideas from coaches, tap into coachees' experiences, expand thinking, and empower them
to make their own choices (Webb, 2019, Chapter 2). He explains that in order to effectively do
this, you must possess three skill sets: coaching mindset, coaching skill set, and coaching tool
set. The concept of process versus content is another important concept discussed, in which he
emphasizes the importance of coaches understanding that it is the coachee who creates the
content (ideas, information, and recommendations), while the coach focuses on assisting the
coachee with that content (Webb,2019, Chapter 2). According to his explanation, coaching is an
application of the Action-Reflection Cycle, which helps us understand the effects of our actions

and adjust our thinking and behavior in order to achieve improvement. This chapter introduces
the COACH model, which is described as the five components of a coaching conversation:
Connect, Outcome, Awareness, Course, and Highlights (Webb, 2019, Chapter 2). He continues
to mention how leadership is more than being directive within coaching.@
Effective coaches are capable of utilizing a variety of leadership styles depending on the
situation and the specific interaction within their leadership role. Coaching is a mindset, skill set,
and tool set that can be integrated into your various leadership roles (Webb, 2019, Chapter 3).
Following that, he discusses each component of The COACH Model in more detail. The "C"
refers to the "Connect" stage of The COACH Model, which consists of two parts. The first is to
build rapport with the person you are talking to; and the second is to follow-up on the action
steps discussed in the previous coaching conversation (Webb, 2019, Chapter 4). The "O" in the
model represents the outcome, which guides the conversation and ensures that the conversation
has achieved its goal (Webb, 2019, Chapter 5). It is through dialogue that the coach and coachee
shape the outcome into something useful and achievable. "A" stands for awareness in the model,
which emphasizes the importance of asking powerful questions that stimulate deep insight from
various perspectives (Webb, 2019, Chapter 6). Coaches can use these questions to stimulate or
provoke reflection, helping them to develop their own ideas and providing them with feedback to
enhance their awareness. "C" stands for course. According to Webb (2019), the purpose of action
steps is to assist coachees in successfully implementing the insights and discoveries they have
gained from the coaching conversation. Insights paired with action steps will produce the
progress coachees hope to see. Coaching actions should be simple, move coachees toward their
goals, and be achievable before the next coaching session (Webb, 2019, Chapter 8). "H" stands
for Highlights, where Webb explains that the coaching conversation concludes with a powerful

conclusion, and the coachee's learning is reinforced through a Highlights question (Webb, 2019,
Chapter 9). Using highlight questions about sessions, he stresses the importance of coaches
summarizing the valuable points and lessons learned from sessions in a simplified manner. In
addition to encouraging reflection, learning, accountability, and motivation, following up on
action steps can also provide an empathetic ear and an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments.
Integrating the COACH Model into everyday conversations can strengthen relationships and
help people excel (Webb, 2019, Chapter 10). Webb concludes by highlighting strategies for
excelling in coaching, including learning from books, developing a positive mindset, receiving
additional training, and not expecting to be an expert right away.
Personal Reflection
There were many impactful comments made by Webb (2019) throughout this text. There
are several points that stand out to me, including the importance of utilizing the Holy Spirit and
not going into this field with the assumption that you have all the answers. This reminds me of
Proverbs 3:5-6 which states “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own
understanding; submit yourself to him in all your ways and he will make your paths straight”
(English Standard Version Bible, 2001). Once we accumulate all the knowledge and the degree
within this field, sometimes we may feel as though we know it all or at least more than others.
While this may be true at some level, we will never know enough to be able to function
independently of the Holy Spirit. Considering that coaching involves supporting individuals in
their lives, the only effective way to assist in this field is to have the Holy Spirit guide you, since
without it you may obstruct God's plans for these individuals. In Matthew 16, when Jesus
mentioned to his disciples that He would be crucified, Peter with well intentions, rebuked Jesus
saying that it should not happen, then Jesus responded to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are

a stumbling block to Me. For you do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men”
(English Standard Version Bible, 2001). In order to avoid interfering with God’s will it is
imperative to be in alignment with the Holy Spirit. As Webb mentioned, we need to change our
mindsets before entering into this field, and it is important to align ourselves with Christ so that
we have the gift of discernment and can listen to His promptings. In addition to the Holy Spirit,
the way we communicate has a great deal of power. It is crucial to recognize that there are times
to speak and times to remain silent. It is often assumed that the more effective we are at forming
sentences, the better we will be at helping our clients, however, I believe that the real skill in
communication is timing. Being able to identify the appropriate times to ask these questions and
the appropriate times to remain silent and reflect. As a result of the assistance of the Holy Spirit,
all will be provided.
Professional Application
There are many points in this book that I believe can be useful to life coaches. In this text,
he emphasizes that in order to be an effective coach, the client must be allowed to create the
content while the coach's focus is on the process (Webb, 2019, Chapter 2). It is important to
recognize that allowing the coachee to create the idea and information not only distinguishes the
coaching field from other helping professions, but it is also a useful tool for helping the coachee
advance. Many times, when we are in a helping position, we may feel that we need to suggest
ideas to clients, but it empowers individuals when they feel as if they have the capacity to
produce ideas on their own. I believe everything can be connected into the bible, in Luke 7:47,
Jesus mentioned “Therefore I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven; that is why she loved
much. But the one who is forgiven little, loves little” (English Standard Version Bible, 2001).
My interpretation of this verse is that the harder we work for something, the better we appreciate

in the end. Therefore, since coaching is intended to empower individuals, the process vs content
concept aligns with this objective. If a coach introduces his/her ideas into the session, you could
potentially waste time on an area that is not of interest to the person. Alternatively, if the coach
assists the individual in finding their own answers, they will be more likely to feel a sense of
accomplishment and take ownership of the process. Additionally, this approach helps to ensure
that the individual is learning the skills that are most relevant to their life. This book enhances
the practice of coaching because it addresses ineffective practices that are not useful within this
field. It provides useful gems such as the role of the Holy Spirit within these coaching sessions,
asking open ended questions to enable that support of the client, or utilizing the COACH model.
All of these will help those pursuing his field have a better understanding of how to be an
effective coach.@
