“Millions of children are victims of child abuse world-wide” (van Leuven et al., 2023).
Child abuse, emotional and physical, is an issue across the world with negative
consequences. The child’s overall well-being is at risk. There is also an increase in the
risk of several physical and psychological health problems that may present over the
course of the child’s life. Negative effects from child abuse and neglect can impact not
only the individual but others that are involved. There is an importance of prevention,
intervention, and support systems to address the impact of child abuse and neglect.

Child sexual abuse is an issue across the world that can result in negatively effecting
individuals involved including the child, their family, and even the community. Females
are nearly twice as likely to be at risk for sexual assault, however, males can also be
sexually assaulted. The act of sexual abuse towards a child can impact their development
and cause negative effects throughout their life. If sexual abuse is reported the victim
may be subjected to physical exams, questioning, court proceedings, and other

uncomfortable situations. Providing help for victims of child sexual abuse is important
for the child to heal and be able to move forward.

“Child abuse and neglect is defined as any action (physical, emotional, and/or sexual) by
a caregiver that results in harm, potential harm, or threat of harm to a child” (Landau et
al., 2022). Over recent years most areas have started using electronic health records
which has made identifying potential abusive and neglectful behavior easier. The
electronic records system is able to notice patterns in children when healthcare
professionals see them. Where electronic health records make it easier to notice patterns
of neglect or abuse it is still up to the professional to look for any signs and report any
such findings.

Among mental health issues, major depressive disorder (MDD) is just one of the
disorders children who were abused and/or neglected are at higher risk of developing.
Children with healthy childhoods seem to have a higher brain flow than those that were
victims of childhood abuse and trauma. Major depressive disorder (MDD) as well as

other mental health conditions as a result of child abuse and neglect can cause negative
effects on education, employment, relationships. Other results that are often seen in
individuals suffering from mental disorders stemming from abuse and neglect are obesity,
substance abuse, insomnia, and even suicide.

“Neglect is generally defined as a failure to meet the basic needs of a child, typically
encompassing food, shelter, clothing, medical care, and supervision”N(Font & Maguire-
Jack, 2020). Research suggests there is a correlation with individuals living in poverty
and childhood neglect. Neglect can occur in several forms such as inadequate shelter,
food, exposing a child to domestic violence, and/or leaving a child unsupervised. In
addition, children living in poverty and experiencing neglect are at higher risk for
dropping out of school, teen pregnancy, incarceration, and substance abuse.

Abuse and neglect in children are often an underreported problem worldwide. Frequently
health care workers play a key role in detecting signs of child abuse and neglect. With
their training they are able to notice small details that may lead them to uncover a much
larger problem. It is important that healthcare professionals are properly trained and

given the resources necessary to detect and report suspected child abuse. With these
individuals being educated on this topic, it can save lives.

”Child abuse has short and long term consequences” (James & Green, 2018).
Research shows experiencing abuse during childhood is associated with several physical
issues later in life. These may include chronic conditions such as heart disease, obesity,
diabetes, and in some instances even a shortened lifespan. Stress and trauma caused by
abuse can interrupt the normal development in children which can negatively affect them
throughout their lives. This makes addressing the impacts of childhood abuse and neglect
vital for physical health, as well as mental health and overall well-being.

According to Palusci, J., Schnitzer, P., and Collier, A., 2023, it is estimated that 1,770
children died in 2019 as a result of child abuse and neglect. It is likely that the number of
deaths is actually higher but underreported in some instances. Many of the children that
have died as a result of child abuse and/or neglect had chronic illness and/or disabilities,
difficulty in school, and mental health issues.

“Child maltreatment is a significant manifestation of aggression and violence against
minors” (Cabrera, Torres, & Harcourt, 2020). The annual number of cases of child abuse
and neglect continues to rise each year around the world. The article discusses four types
of abuse, sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect and how each form
of abuse can affect children. Research has shown child abuse and neglect can impact a
child’s health, social development, and psychological functioning. Brain development
and neural structures can be disturbed in children faced with childhood abuse and
maltreatment.

neglect. Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science, 692(1), 26–49.

Globally there are causes and risks factors that play a role in child abuse and
maltreatment. “Child maltreatment is a complex problem affecting millions of children in
the United States every year” (Font & Maguire-Jack, 2020). Parents that have been
victims of child abuse themselves are at higher risks of mistreating their children than
those who were not mistreated as children. Additionally, stress from economic hardship,
loss of employment, parents caring for children with special needs, and/or those facing
divorce or other high stress situations are at greater risk of abusing and/or mistreating
children.
