In this world we are bombarded with all kinds of information, propaganda, music choices and
entertainment options. As parents, teachers, and preachers you might have said “garbage in
garbage out”, my mom used to say that to me all the growing up, I didn’t pay much mind to it
then and bet most people still don’t. But we should, what we put into our minds, our soul and our
bodies is what eventually comes out, good or bad. “Many run after novelties, charmed with every
new thing; learn to judge between truth and its counterfeits, and you will not be led astray.” 1 It is
important to “prove all things” and “hold fast that which is good”2 Being careful as to what we
watch, read, and listen to. “It is painful to observe how many embrace anything it if be but
earnestly brought before them. They swallow the medicine of every spiritual quack who has
enough of brazen assurance to appear to be sincere. I say to you, as Paul wrote to the
Corinthians, "Brethren, be not children in understanding;" test everything that claims your
faith.”3 As this generations leaders and mentors I agree with Spurgeon we need to test everything
make sure it lines up with the God’s Word. “In order to preach the gospel well, we must have
such a knowledge of it that we are practically conversant with it. We must have it in our hearts,
and also, as the common saying has it, at our fingers' ends. We must be rich that we may scatter
treasures. We must be scribes well instructed that we may be apt to teach.”4 As an adult, mother
of six, and minister I now realize the depth and wisdom of my mother’s words. If we allow this
world to fill us with its garbage there won’t be room for the bounty of treasures God’s word has

for us. “But first and most importantly seek (aim at, strive after) His kingdom and His
righteousness [His way of doing and being right—the attitude and character of God], and all
these things will be given to you also.” (Matthew 6:33 amp)
