Who was James Henley Thornwell? Describe his attempt to provide a Christian
response to slavery and sectional tensions.
Your Answer:
James Henley Thornwell was one of the greatest American theologians. He was a
pastor of Presbyterian churches in South Carolina. This response to slavery was that it
was a curse and a sign of the fall of mankind, like it is stated in the Bible in Genesis. He
said that slavery was inconsistent with the gospel. In his writings he says that African
Americans are like our brothers and sisters, not our slaves. He goes on to explain that
slave-owners shouldn't give them so little, barely enough to survive on, but to give them
more like to feed, clothe, educate, and care for them as family.
Good! But he also ended up advocating against slavery and was critical of "wage
slavery" in the North.
