Attacks on Christianity
Since the formation of the United States, there have been attacks on Christianity. From polices
undermining what God has asked of mankind to mainstream media, that has looked down upon
wholesome God loving individuals and blacklisted them, the attacks come from all over. Tim
Goeglein discussed these attacks on Christianity during speech at Liberty University in 2013 in
which the basis of this essay has been derived.
President Reagan’s outlook on America
According to Tim Goeglein’s speech, President Ronald Reagan’s outlook of America was that of
an exceptional and great country. "They did not know that this affable, winsome, funny man was
deadly serious about the greatness of the United States of America"1(Goeglein, 2013) President
Reagan’s policies were drastically different from that of current president Joe Biden. Reagan
advocated for tax reductions where our current administration has looked to raise taxes to fund
their agenda. “Whether by accident or by design, many of the major tax provisions in the
multitrillion-dollar Build Back Better Act (BBBA) would empower unelected and unaccountable
bureaucrats to determine U.S. tax policy.” (Brashers, 2022) While Reagan relied on following
the House of Representatives as responsible for tax policy, Biden has attempted to circumvent
these past practices. As a registered republican myself, I would say that President Biden looks at
the nation as not of greatness but that of needing more liberal overreach while systematically
running this once great country into the ground. Another place where President’s Reagan and
Biden have differed is in popularity and approval. Reagan won his election in a triumphant
landslide and had great approval whereas Biden’s election was somewhat controversial and
contested with dismal approval ratings. The economy is also vastly different from Reagan’s
booming economy to that of present time “Just 22% of Americans rate economic conditions in
the country as good, with 41% calling conditions somewhat poor, and another 37% saying
they’re very poor.” (Edwards-Levy, 2022)
Major attacks on the Christian foundations of America
Tim Goeglein discusses three major attacks on the foundations of Christianity in America which
are, the attack on the institution of marriage, human life, and religious liberty (Goedlein, 2013)
Beginning with the first attack described of the attack on the institution of marriage Genesis 2:24
(NIV) states “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united1to his wife, and they
become one flesh.” The U.S1Supreme Court1decision that confirms this attack is Obergefell v.
Hodges (2015) which stated in a ruling of (5–4) on June 26, 2015, “state bans on1same-sex
marriage1and on recognizing same-sex marriages duly performed in other jurisdictions are
unconstitutional under the1due process1and1equal protection1clauses of the1Fourteenth
Amendment1to the1U.S. Constitution.” (Encyclopedia Britannica, 2015) The next attack is that of
human life. Proverbs 6:16-19 (NIV) states “There are six things the1Lord1hates, seven that are
detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood,1a heart that
devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness1who pours out lies
and a person who stirs up conflict in the community.” Within this passage there are multiple
correlations to be made with abortion. Sheading innocent blood, devising wicked schemes
(which abortion is) and rushing into evil. The U.S. Supreme court decision Roe v. Wade (1973) is
this attack on Christianity that thankfully has been overturned in 2022 with1Dobbs v. Jackson
Women's Health Organization (JWHO) (2022). In this decision it stated that “The ruling upheld
Mississippi’s ban on abortion at 15 weeks of pregnancy, overturned1Roe v. Wade, and ended the
federal constitutional right to abortion in the United States.” (Planned Parenthood, 2022) The
third attack is the attack on religious liberties. When you look at the Bible there are many
instances addressing religious freedom or liberties. Romans 1:16 (NIV) states “For I am not
ashamed of the gospel,1because it is the power of God1that brings salvation to everyone who
believes:1first to the Jew,1then to the Gentile.” One of many U.S. Supreme court cases that
demonstrates this attack would be Lee v. Weisman'(1992). In this case “The Court looked at
whether officially approved, clergy-led prayer at public school graduations in Providence, Rhode
Island, violated the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment. The Court applied the 3-
pronged test from1Lemon v. Kurtzman1(1971) and in a 5-4 decision, held the practice to be a
violation of the Establishment Clause.” (Bill of Rights Institute, n.d.)
Attacks in further detail
Of the attacks listed above I have chosen to go into further detail on the attack of human life.
This is in direct violation of the Ten Commandments handed down by God to Moses with “Thou
shall not kill.” Up until this year, this attack was continuing but by the grace of God was able to
be struck down by Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization (JWHO) (2022). This case
came to be because “In 2018, the Mississippi legislature1banned abortions1after 15 weeks of
gestation, except in cases of narrowly defined medical emergency or severe fetal abnormality.
The law was a challenge to both1Roe1and1Casey. Jackson Woman’s Health Organization, the sole
abortion provider in the state, contested the ban.” (Norden et al., 2022) Other cases that
demonstrate this attack would be, Oklahoma Call for Reproductive Justice et al. v. O’Connor, et
al. (2021), Whole Woman’s Health v. Paxton (2021) and Bryant, et al. vs. Woodall, et al. (2021).
(Center for reproductive rights, 2022) Thankfully all these cases and many more that attempted
to block abortion bans or to make abortion more readily available across the country became null
and void with the 2022 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade (1973) Finally a win for those who
serve and believe in God.
Is the country moving in the right direction?
In most areas I believe the answer is no. Do we have chances to change this and start heading in
the right direction? That answer would be yes but will take a lot of hard work and God above all.
Instances that we are moving in the right direction is the overturning of Roe v. Wade and in other
areas such as what Tim Goeglein described is with the sanctity of marriage being under attack
along with attacks coming from radical Islam, taking religion (God) out of school and
government. We as a nation need to get back on track and put God back into everywhere that he
has systematically been removed from. When looking for what we need to do as Christians I
look to Mark 16:15 (NIV) which states “He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the
gospel to all creation.” No longer can we sit idle and watch this country spiral out of control. It
is time to speak up and let those who run this country that it is unacceptable to be keeping God
out of everything we do. The country was in much better shape when God was accepted in all
areas of the government and our daily lives.
