Step 2: Persuasive Essay: First Draft
I Have to Watch What I Eat, I’m on a Diet
Have you ever found yourself wishing you could shed ten more pounds or wishing you
would go down a pants size? As someone who went from a size zero to a size 6 within a matter
of 3 years, I found myself having to watch what I eat and exercise regularly for the first time in
my life. Dieting was something extremely new to me and when I delve deeper into this
newfound world, I found myself realizing how truly unhealthy society has made the process of
eating correctly. In the last five years, dieting has changed tremendously to the point where it can
cause long term side effects on a persons health if not approved by a medical professional. Diet
culture as a whole has become out of control, with new fad diets emerging such as Intermittent
Fasting, Liquid Diet, and Weight Watchers that overall can be hazardous to the human body.
One diet that most people will try out if they are seriously trying to lose weight, and more
quick than is healthy, is Intermittent Fasting. Intermittent Fasting is a type of diet where you go
periods of your day without eating. There are apps that can be downloaded on to one’s phone that
can be used to track what times of the day are used for fasting and which are used for eating.
When one uses this app, they can go in and select how much weight they are trying to lose in a
certain amount of time based on their body weight and the app will tell them what to do to get
there. This most certainly is not healthy. When the Intermitent Fasting diet is being used, one is
essentially starving themselves and depriving their body of the nutrients they need. The human
body signals you when its hungry and ready to eat, so by depiriving it of eating when its ready,
you can ultimately damage your body further.
Another more dangerous diet that can be used for different reasons is the Liquid Diet.
Liquid diets can range from just drinking water over a period of time or alternating with water,
smoothies, and juices. Once again, if this diet is used incorrectly, it can do more harm than good.
Some people have used this diet for maybe a day or two after a weekend of unhealthy eating to
essentially cleanse their body of toxins. However, it is when it is used for a long period of time
such as weeks where it can cause the most damage. By only consuming liquids, your body is not
getting the proper nutrients it needs to survive and you can find yourself experiencing more
health issues like blurred vision, headaches, and so on.
The last, and possibly most popular diet, is the Weight Watchers program. Weight
Watchers uses a points system based on your body weight, weight loss experience, and reason for
wanting to lose weight to essentially help you track your daily caloric intake. The program can
you give you somewhere around 30 points for each day and different foods can be anywhere
from 0 to 50 points just for one item. This diet program can be hazardous because the person
who is using it is now questioning every single thing they put into their body. They are no longer
enjoying what they eat anymore or trying to find a healthier alternative for something they love
to eat, rather than justifying why they can’t have it at all. This diet creates an unhealthy
relationship with food that can last a lifetime.

Unfortunately with social media as popular as it is today, fad diets such as a Intermittent
Fasting, Liquid Diet, and Weight Watches are only going to become increasingly popular. Every
persons body is different and we all have different needs. What may work for one person will not
always work for the next and that is okay. If you want to lose weight, research and consulting a
professional is often the best option rather than trying a fad diet that could do more damage
mentally and physically.
