interpretation of STEM as well as the epistemological questions,
tensions and issues that this curriculum raises?
4. Methodology and

Researchers wanted to investigate the influence that have led to
interpretations of STEM curriculum and issues that arise.
Results of this literature review shows that the term STEM
when used in relation to curriculum encapsulates a range of
purposes and meanings to stakeholders.

I would like to create a sequential curriculum plan that builds
on itself from grade level to grade level. I would also like this
curriculum to be cross-curricular so this article is great for
providing information about interdisciplinary STEM. This will
help with developing teaching strategies and re-examining the
things I want my students to learn throughout the course.

EngrTEAMS was a grant that focused on PD for STEM
educators. During the first 3 summers, EngrTEAMS provided
3 weeks of extensive PD that was focused on engineering to
support K-12 student learning. Teacher participants were
recruited from 5 school districts (all taught Science). During the
RESEARCH MATRIX 3
summer PD teachers developed integrated STEM units to use in
their classroom. They then piloted their curriculum in a
university summer camp.

This study showed that engineering practices can serve as
integrators in a STEM unit. A STEM curriculum that
purposefully integrates science and math concepts provide
conceptual integration between disciplines. This article helped
with ways to integrate science and math concepts into my
curriculum. This research also gave me an idea how to
formulate and assess reform to my current curriculum.

Exploring critical components of an integrated STEM curriculum: an
application of the innovation implementation framework
2020
2. Theoretical Framework Qualitative Theoretical Framework
3. Research Question(s) How was the innovative implementation framework used to
identify and describe the implementation of critical components
of a newly developed STEM curriculum?
4. Methodology and
Results
Researchers used classroom observations, student interviews,
and teacher interviews to take a look at the methodology and
intsruments used over a 2 year study of curriculum
implementation. This paper discussed 3 ways in which
innovatively implementing the framework enhanced the
understanding of curriculum implementation. It took a deeper
look at critical components such as informing instrument design
and data collection and implementation patterns.

This article was helpful with my curriculum change plan
because it spoke mostly about implementing a new curriculum
and introduced a framework which could make implementation
more successful.

Planning a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
(STEM) curriculum for young children: A collaborative project for pre-
service teacher education
2019
2. Theoretical Framework Constructivist Framework
3. Research Question(s) 1. What are the things to consider in planning the STEM
Curriculum?
2. What are the essential curriculum standards and skills in the
proposed STEM Curriculum?
3. What curriculum design will be used to organize the contents
of the curriculum?
4. Methodology and
Results
This research uses qualitative data from planning sessions and
uses six phases for conducting the study:
Phase 1: Review of relevant theories and practices. The
undergraduate students discussed the theories and practices of
STEM Education, after which, they collaboratively planned for a
STEM Curriculum for young Filipino children.
Phase 2: Designing the curriculum framework. From the result
of phase 1, the students identified the things to consider in
planning a STEM curriculum for young children. This will serve
as the important principles in developing any STEM curriculum.
Phase 3: Identification of essential curriculum standards and
skills. From the result of phase 2, the students identified
important content standards and skills that should be developed
in the STEM curriculum, proposed a curriculum design, and
developed sample lessons.
Phase 4: Identification of curriculum design. The student
teachers discussed the essential curriculum standards and skills
needed for the proposed STEM curriculum and developed an
appropriate curriculum design.
Phase 5. Identification of STEM lessons and sample activities.
The result of Phase 4 was used to identify STEM lessons and
activities. Since classes in basic education are on vacation, the
try-out was done in class. The students were divided into several
groups and were asked to present their STEM lessons through
demonstration teaching. Suggestions and comments were given
after each presentation to improve the lessons.
Phase 6: Finalization of output. From the result of phase 5, the
students revised the lessons for actual implementation.
RESULTS
The research indicated that there are 6 things that need to be
RESEARCH MATRIX 5
considered in developing a STEM curriculum:
1. Interests of the students on the topics and activities
2. Availability of materials to be used
3. Appropriateness of the topics and activities to the
learners
4. Relevance to learners’ daily lives
5. Connection of the contents and activities to the K-12
Curriculum
6. Integration of science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics
This study also determined that there are three levels of learning
outcomes that are essential for a planned STEM curriculum:
concepts, essential skills, and habits of mind. Students in this
study also chose activity-based curriculum as the design for their
proposed STEM curriculum.

This article walks through developing a STEM curriculum for
young children. It talks about the importance of hands-on
activities. It also states that teachers should plan their activities
based on research-based principles. This article also talks about
how its important for students to be provided the opportunities to
work collaboratively in order to develop critical thinking and
creativity. These are all really important things to remember
when developing a STEM curriculum.

Integrated STEM Models of Implementation

Qualitative Theoretical Framework
3. Research
Question(s)
1. What models of integrated STEM teaching emerge from the teacher pairs
during implementation?
2. Which model or models of integrated STEM were the most effective
approach to teaching STEM content?
4. Methodology and
Results
Researchers used student interviews, teacher interviews, and teacher reports as
well as curriculum materials and student samples as artifacts for the analysis.
Teachers were asked to provide students work with low, med, and high
performance. To ensure internal validity and reliability of the research,
researchers used triangulation which used multiple sources of data.
RESULTS
Student Interviews- Two major themes emerged:
1. Collaboration through student grouping and pairing
RESEARCH MATRIX 6
2. Community of practice through integrated STEM learning
Teacher interviews- Two major themes emerged:
1. The value of teacher collaboration
2. The central role adaptability played as teachers implemented
curriculum.
TRAILS identified the problem of no protocol to determine the best approach
to STEM implementation. Teachers who participated in the study struggled to
plan for integrated STeM lessons due to constraints that were placed on them.
This study aimed to gather experiences from teachers and students in order to
better describe models of integrated STEM. Three models emerged from this
study:
1. Content Inclusion Integration Model
2. STEM Content Integration Model
3. STEM Content & Practices Integration: Transdisciplinary Model

I thought this study was applicable to my change plan because it discusses
both the benefits and limits of integration models and how it changes from
school to school and even teacher to teacher and it is up to the teacher to
decide which model suites them best. This specific research focused on
understanding how teachers implement an integrated STEM approach but not
on student learning but I would be interested to know how student learning is
affected by the different implementation models.
