In Joshua 22:1-34 Joshua thanks the tribes of Reubenites and the Gadites and the half-
tribe of Manasseh also known as the eastern tribes for obeying him and Moses and for a job well
done. The tribes were rewarded with gold, silver, and livestock for fulfilling their long
commitment and obedience. Joshua blesses the tribes and sends them home. Upon their return
and with good intensions they built a great altar to God along the Jordan River. Their good
intentions were misunderstood and almost caused a war because the altar was viewed as a
travesty by the western tribes. Fortunately, once the eastern tribes explained the reason and
purpose of the altar, the misunderstanding was resolved, and both the eastern and western tribes
were pleased. This critique examines how we must first seek God’s guidance and take the time to
listen to one another before jumping to conclusions that could be detrimental.
