Analyze how you can maintain high standards and demonstrate high expectations for all
ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse students in the classroom.
I can maintain high standards for all of my students by first establishing classroom management
and holding my students to high expectations no matter their unique population. Next, I can have
pieces and parts from the students' culture within the classroom, quickly showing that their
background and culture are appreciated, providing a comfortable environment. I believe that all
students can learn; it's all about tapping into their interests and building on what they like to do.
Tapping into the students' interests and building upon what they are interested in can help
immerse them into learning and develop healthy learning habits. The specific behaviors that
teachers engage in clearly communicate their expectations for students. I can focus on ensuring
that my students understand that they have high expectations and ways for helping my students
meet those expectations. Finally, I will differentiate instruction to address my classroom's diverse
learning styles, needs, and skills. Through differentiated instruction, students are challenged but
not frustrated, and teachers can facilitate learning. Equity is a critical feature that we can add
within our classrooms in order to make sure that any part of the diverse population in the
classroom does not get left behind.
Discuss how you would differentiate instruction for the inclusion of various learning styles.
Differentiation for various learning styles is an integral part of teaching students as each student
is different from the next. Learning the learning styles within the classroom can allow you to
choose the vast amount of different tools that can be introduced into the class. When using the
21st-century framework in the classroom, I can use low-tech and high-tech to help with many of
the various learning styles. For example, some students learn from text best, so having that
option is easy with technology like computers and tablets. Nowadays chrome books are being
introduced to many schools. I believe that they are a cheap way to allow students to be
introduced to technology, especially the technology they will be using in the classroom that
offers audio and visual aid depending on the learning style. Also, allowing the students to do
some collaboration is a great way to be able to allow students to feed off of each other. Having
the students work together can indirectly make the students aware of their strengths and
weaknesses and learn a valuable skill of working together. Having a wide range of learning
activities that play an essential part in different learning styles is also crucial for instruction that
caters to different learning styles.
Discuss how you would modify instruction to meet the needs of students who are
designated, second language learners.
Teaching 21st-century skills to them would be a great idea when dealing with designated second
language learners because it can help them get on track to higher standards. In addition, teaching
ELLs how to use technology would be something that can help boost independent study by
allowing students to use tech to assist with their learning. The use of technology is one way that I
can meet the needs of ELL students. Technology can be utilized to help their various learning
styles, but specific technology can serve as a platform that can allow students to practice English
even outside of the classroom. According to Penn State College of Education, one way to support
ELLs that I can use in my classroom is by "speaking more slowly, enunciating carefully while
still using a natural tone and rhythm. Use gestures with your speech. Use facial expressions to
indicate emotion and other kinds of body language or miming" (N/A). These types of actions by
the teacher can help to deal with communication problems that may occur.
Another thing to think of doing is to allow students to participate in the activities. From my
experience of learning languages and teaching ESL, it is vital to enable students to participate
and get them involved in speaking and interacting in a meaningful way. As the students interact
in a meaningful way, ELL students can make connections within the language that they are
beginning to acquire.
