Educators are continuously given opportunities for potential assessments to interact with
students about ongoing learning that will be able to help teachers to adapt with their
teaching. (Earle, 2023) Teachers in today’s educational system should take advantage of
formative and summative practices in and outside of the classroom to create a more flexible and
ideal way for educators to identify what students are retaining, and what needs to be revisited in
the lesson plan. Earle (2023) shares how assessments can be influential in school and classroom
culture and provides impactful teacher and student ideas on how learning is being taught. These
assessments can look like multiple-choice tests that can diagnose, understand, gaps or end of unit
checks through a summative lens. The overall reason for this article is to share how educators
can process and gather information to make fair and accurate judgments about their students'
achievements. (Harlen, 2007, p. 11)
A formative practice that can be utilized in the classroom to ensure that educators are
meeting the needs of their students by providing more time on certain lesson concepts or making
good judgment on moving forward within the lesson. Black and Wiliam (2009 & 2018) identify
four key points on how formative assessments can understand where the learner is going, where
they are right now, how to get their students there, and using self-assessment and peer reviews.
These points can look like asking assessment questions from a different perspective, supporting
good notes for lessons for later concepts, allowing for students to engage with their peers on
group projects, etc.… Within a summative practice, can be presented as an end of term test, a
unit, quiz, or summary of the information that was taught. It is also useful for educators to
understand who their audiences are, so they can report accurate information. and although these

formative assessment, for example: a can identify gaps within learning concepts for the next
school year planning. Using summative formats can also provide a collection of data to help
ensure a more accurate and developmental school curriculum for future educators and students.
As educators, utilizing formative and summative assessments are important for teachers
to incorporate validity and reliability within their structured format. It is important for these
assessments to provide good feedback to educators but are they effective if not held accountable
to a fair and accurate record. Validity may come off as students regurgitating information being
taught, but are they understanding the information? Ensuring that students are understanding
materials that are being taught, rather than a cookie cutter questionnaire, maybe educators could
view it from a different perspective to enhance student engagement to have the student dissect
the information. The reliability of the assessment is just as important to show that it is meeting
the expectation of the objectives, meeting the standardization of the state, and using materials in
a controlled environment. Educators are held to a standard of creating an equal opportunity for
all students and record, accurately and fairly for the best outcome for their student academic
achievements. Assessments are important to integrate within your teacher lesson plan, to show
that students are retaining information and being able to explain what they have learned. Using
assessments can provide good feedback on how useful and valuable the information that is being
taught.
Topic Analysis
This article shows the importance of how educators can use different formative and
summative ways to assess their students. Although not all students will meet the requirements or
reach the expectations of the educators, it is still important to adjust, go over the material as
much as the student needs, and allow for valuable and reliable feedback. Teacher and student

relationships can play a major role in understanding their students to allow them to adjust to their
preferences and learning styles. This will ensure that teachers are making efforts to create a
successful learning environment. Formative and summative assessments can look very different
but serve the same purpose in reaching the objectives of the lesson plan and state standards.
Personal Reflection
Going into my seventh year of teaching, I believe that assessments are most important to
incorporate into the classroom, because it shows that your teachings are being understood and
taught properly. I want to make sure that my students are receiving the highest quality of
education in my classroom and create free thinkers. If students can explain information in full
detail about what was discussed within the unit in their own words, then that shows me that
students are retaining information and meeting the requirements of the academic standards.
Using formative summative assessments are good sources of feedback to show if my lesson plan
needs to change or needs adjustment from a new perspective to explain the information again. I
want to instill a reliable and valid source of record for my future students when being evaluated.
