All About Me
I am an Elementary Education Major, and I am very excited to start my career as an
elementary school teacher. I know that most schools have one teacher teaching all subjects but if
I had to choose a single concentration, it would be math because math is consistent. I have never
been the biggest fan of change and math is something this has always been and will always be
the same. Once you know a single mathematical concept, it can be used and applied to a variety
of different problems. I absolutely love finding the many tricks that exist in mathematics that
make solving problems easier and less time consuming. Although I would consider math my all-
time favorite subject, there are still things about math that I do not enjoy. After being in higher
level math classes, I have seen how math is a lot more complex than just following a few simple
steps. There are also problems that require proof. Personally, I am a very analytical person and
prefer to follow things step by step and proofs are something that require imagination and
creativity. There is no simple step by step procedure for solving a proof but rather having to
think outside of the box. Even though I have struggled with this new approach to math, I am
thankful because it has shown me the more creative part of math rather than it being a solely
analytical, step by step, subject. On a different note, when I think back to my first mathematical
memory, I was learning about positive and negative numbers. I struggled at first but thankfully
my teacher was able to visually show me how to add negative numbers and from that point
forward it was a piece of cake. Additionally, in high school, my calculus teacher had a huge
impact on my mathematical perception. Her love for math was so strong that she made everyone
in that class enjoy math just as much as her.
Overall, math is defined as the study of the relationship and application of numbers. This
definition is important in considering how much of an impact math has on our day to day lives.
Ultimately, I think that if I maintain a positive approach to math, my teaching will be more
beneficial to my students. If a teacher has a more negative approach, then the students will also
have a negative attitude towards the subject being taught.
