Textbook Reflection: History & Geography
Part A – Textbook Information
Read each of the three prompts below and respond by writing one solid paragraph of at least
five sentences. Make sure you use your textbook to support your responses.
1. What are some ways that teachers can develop students’ chronological thinking,
interpretation, and research skills in history and geography? Explain your viewpoint on this with
at least one solid paragraph of five sentences.
[Maxim (2017) says, “In order for history to be meaningful, students need to know how
to sequence events in time, examine the events in depth to learn about them, and know the
names of people and places associated with them.” Chronological thinking is incredibly
important in everyday life and in the classroom. We see chronological thinking a lot in social

studies due to the past events we teach about. It allows a student to be able to understand
when things happen and how quickly things change. Interpretation and research skills are also
incredibly important not only in life but also a school setting. Social studies is mainly about
learning about past events and in order to do that, students will need to know how to
successfully research an event.] 2. Describe one classroom learning activity that would integrate
the 5 Themes of Geography along with history. Explain your viewpoint on this with at least one
solid paragraph of five sentences.
[A good example of a classroom learning activity could potentially be an Explorer
Adventure activity. Students would be a well-known explorer from the past and create a poster
or presentation about their journey. Students would first start with researching the starting
point and draw the route that this explorer took on the adventure. They would be in charge of
talking about the places that the given explorer traveled to and how the different climates and
environment changed their expedition. They could also research about how their explorer
intermingled with the individuals they came into contact with. This activity allows students to
connect their creativity with their knowledge of history and geography.
3. How do geographic skills explain the interaction of people, places, and events and also
support historical understanding? Explain your viewpoint on this with at least one solid
paragraph of five sentences.
[Geographic skills play an important part in clarifying the interaction of people, places,
and events by clarifying the effects that different places have on choices and consequences. For
example, the geographic skill of mapping allows us to see the effects of human movement and
environmental changes on history and different events. Geography tells a story of migration,
conflict, and alliance, illustrating how places are molded by human action and how major events
had unfolded. Finaly, geographic skills give assistance to the base layer that enhances our
understanding of the past, and aids to connect the links between people, places and events that
molded the past.]

Part B – Biblical Worldview
Select one of your responses to the prompts above and fully explain your response utilizing a
biblical perspective. Make sure you include a Bible verse and explain how this verse is relevant
to the prompt and supports your biblical perspective. This section should be two solid
paragraphs of five sentences each.
[Without geographical skills, I would not have been able to provide my students with a
detail-oriented timeline with specific occurrences from the Bible. As it says in Jeremiah 30:9,
“Behold, I will bring them from the north country, And gather them from the ends of the earth,
Among them the blind and the lame, The woman with child And the one labors with child,
together; A great throng shall return there. (NKJV)” This verse from the Bible really does a great
job at highlighting the worth and fortune that geography truly offers us. I believe that having
geographical skills supplements a deeper understanding of the Bible and its history. With that
being said, I’m able to naturally teach students about the Bible all while improving their
geographical skills.]
