Hello, my is Mikisha Gilmore my biggest goal is to become an Elementary School teacher.
The grades that I would prefer are prekindergarten to 2nd Grade. I always wanted to become
a teacher all my life, while growing up I enjoyed babysitting and watching my little cousins
and niece and nephews. This was one of my biggest dreams my whole life. Becoming a
teacher is something that I am working hard to become. I currently hold an Associate Degree
in Early Childhood Education and currently working in a daycare with Preschool age chil-
dren. With me spending majority of my teenage years babysitting or volunteering hours at
the local elementary schisms. I wanted to be an educator to be able to help guide the future
generations and it something that I would hold with great honor.
Helping the future of the world is being able to understand the basics of literacy and have
a passion for reading that will bring joy to you and the students. Literacy seems so basic for
many people to understand. This is very important for not only children but for adults also. It
unlocks the world around us and helps keep everyone connected to each other. Without liter-
acy it would be hard to understand reading certain things on social media and even watching
television.
Literacy is way more than just reading and vocabulary, Literature is being able to write
family member letters or being able to read and enjoy new books that come out.
Literacy literally unlocks a new world for people to discover and connect people in ways
that wasn’t possible before. Growing up my favorite subject was Literature and Reading com-
pared to science and Math. This was because it was amazing to read and learn new things while
in the classroom. I always had wonderful memories of reading while at home after school and
even now I enjoy reading while I have free time once my children are sleep or even when I am
on my lunch break while at work. I enjoy reading books that make me feel like I am somewhere
else and that brings me deep into the story and can really dig deep while reading every day and
night. I didn’t enjoy reading in front of my classmates while in school because I wasn’t the best
reader while in elementary and beginning of middle school, but I began to go the library and rent
books to take home and read and after that I couldn’t wait to be asked to read aloud.
My love of books and reading began while my mother was away in the military while I
was growing up. My mother would send me letters and different books while she was stationed
in Afghanistan. She would send me books and letters every week and I would be overjoyed
while reading her letters because I missed her and also wanted to know how she was doing. From
then the start I would began to look for books that will be adventurous to my mind and help me
escape the world at times. Teachers are important in the development of young children’s devel-
opment and reading habits. It is a special place in students hearts that can make or break their
love for enjoying reading. Barbara Moss said that “Teachers must do more than just dispense lit-
eracy skills. They must create classroom content that will support literacy through a wide variety
of text types”(2016). I enjoy teaching my students to read and to look at words and being able to
fully comprehend what it means makes me feel amazing, I try to help all of my students by hav-
ing different groups while in the classroom. I like to break the class into groups based off who
needs more assistance Nike working on certain reading activities and to make sure that I add
someone in the group that will be able to assist the students with understanding the topic at hand.
Literacy is something that has been around for many years. It is also important while talk-
ing about the Bible. The reason that I believe that is because it was always important to being
able to understand God’s word and won’t be able to read the scripts while at home and church. It
is impossible for everyone to be perfect, but God just wants us to try our absolute best while try-
ing to achieve goals.
Being perfect is something that will not be my top priority in my classroom, I will ex-
plain to my children that as long as they try they will be able to get far. I just will be proud that
they are trying and giving their all. Teaching the children this mindset will be beneficial for them
when they get older.
Literacy and me have always had a amazing relationship, and I always believe that my
experiences growing up will help me with becoming the best teacher I can be. While Literacy is
a basic concept, it doesn’t come easy to most students that struggle with literature, it is my job as
a teacher to make it fun to read for them.
